Carrickfergus is a coastal town on the eastern side ofNorthern Ireland. It is well-known for its castle, as a holiday destination butmostly for the beautiful nostalgic song that shares its name. The origin of themelody goes back at least three centuries and the modern version is probably ahybrid of two songs.

This arrangement is part of a series I amproducing which will allow gatherings of guitarists of all levels to playtogether. As a guitarist and guitar teacher, I?ve noticed how arrangements willoften be too easy for some and too hard for others leaving many ensembleplayers frustrated or dissatisfied. This is a deficiency I am resolving.

My aim is to create arrangements which arestimulating for all. I have done this by tailoring parts to suit the differenttechnical and musical experience of each level of guitarist. This makes thearrangements particularly suitable for guitar societies, school groups andfestivals. The required levels are approximated below. As an experienced musicianand composer, I have added many points of musical interest such as modulations,chord substitutions and counterpoint. This also gives teachers and leaders tothe chance to teach their groups about these devices in the context of learninga real work. Guitars 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 all play the main melody at somepoint (Guitar 6 being for near-beginners).

Technical Requirements��

� Guitars1 & 2 will suit players of Grade 6 (intermediate/advanced) standard or above. There is somehigh-position work.

� Guitars3 & 4 are suitable for players of about Grade 4 (intermediate) standard.

� Guitar5 is suitable for a player of about Grade 2 (beginner) standard.

� Guitar6 is suitable for near-beginners. It is mainly open strings with some first-positionstopped notes. Although it is a technically-easy part, it is very motivatingfor guitarists in their early stages to play with a large ensemble. This partis optional.

� Guitar7 is suitable for players of about Grade 5 (intermediate) standard. The bass line hasornamentation, a lot of rhythmic interest and at times, the melody.

Teachers and player can also benefit fromthe fact that a recording of the arrangement, with performance notes, is alwaysavailable on-line.

Johann Sebastian Bachas arrangements of the a69 Sacred Songsa from the Musical Hymnal by Georg Christian Schemelli (Leipzig, 1736) have long been part of the German language vocal concert repertoire and a mainstay in vocal pedagogy. Originally, only these 69 of the 954 hymns in the collection were published with a single bass line as the accompaniment. Bachas contribution was to specify harmonies to be played over those same bass lines by adding figured bass numbers and symbols beneath each note.A figured bass line can easily be turned into a relatively simple guitar accompaniment or a more elaborate setting, offering a range of possibilities that make working with this music both interesting and rewarding for the guitarist. While other period and modern editions of the a69 Sacred Songsa offer accompaniments for keyboard instruments, this Mel Bay publication features intermediate to advanced transcriptions exclusively for the guitar. Best suited to college-level players or advanced aficionados, this special Mel Bay Publications edition includes the vocal line with German lyrics and the guitar accompaniment transcribed from Bachas figured bass lines. Written in guitar-friendly keys, 29 of the transcriptions employ a capo to achieve the original key designed for high voices. Without the capo, these same arrangements would be suitable to be sung by lower voices. The remaining 40 hymns are in their original guitar-friendly keys and so do not require a capo.This volume contains accompaniment settings of all 69 of the sacred songs and arias for which Bach wrote figured bass annotation. For performance variety and convenience, this book includes aScores in their Original Keys,a and stand-alone aGuitar Accompaniment,a and aBass Parts.

Three Preludes on Occitan Songs

The single download comprises of an Introduction with performers' notes, a score with TAB underneath (to aid with the DADGBD tuning) and a score with notes only.

In performance, the guitar is tuned DADGBD (with both strings 1 and 6 tuned to D).

Icomposed Three Preludes on Occitan Songsduring the years I spent living and working in South West France.
I hadthe pleasure of seeing Occitan bands performing at village festivals. The styleof music was coarse and rhythmic with lyrics telling timeless stories. I borrowed the mostsimple of melodic fragments and use them to create contemporary guitar workssuitable for concert performance.

The Cancion de Hialara translates as ?The Spinner?sSong?. In this, I have imitated the rustic drones of the hurdy-gurdies found inOccitan bands through the use of tremolo patterns.

Som Som is a lullaby. This melody isfamiliar to many cultures across Europe and beyond.

L� NostreAse translatesas ?Our Donkey?. It is a comic song which tells of the antics of a stubbornrustic animal. Players should enjoy the hemiola rhythms where 3/4 is set again6/8.

This cancause some difficulty in reading. Also, to take advantage of the sonority ofthe instrument when tuned this way, the unusual playing positions and fingeringare critical. It is for these reasons that I have provided the score in justnotes but also with notes and tablature below.

Rocky Road to Dublin - Arranged for four guitars by Dan Jones

"Rocky Road to Dublin" is a 19th-century Irish song.
Ittells of the trials and experiences of a young man as he travels to Liverpoolin England, via Dublin, from his rural home in Tuam, Ireland.

Thepiece is a favourite instrumental in 9/8 time. It has the characteristics of aslip jig, with five accents in the bar, on quavers 1,3,4,6 and7. These can beheard in the first bar in guitar 1. In the sung version, the singer sings ?1,2, 3, 4, 5? to correspond with these.

Thisarrangement balances the melodic interest across all four guitar parts. It issuitable for intermediate/advanced players.

Carrickfergus is a much-loved traditional Irish song which has been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Joan Baez.

In making this arrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced or concert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct a piece with structure and harmonic depth.

Carrickfergus is presented here in D major with a mid-way modulation to the dominant - A major.

I am excited at the idea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for all environments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike.
