The Banana Boat Song (Day-O) is a traditional Jamaican folk song; the best-known version was released by American singer Harry Belafonte in 1956 and later became one of his signature songs. The song has mento influences, but Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) was commonly classified as an example of the better known calypso music. It is a work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over, and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home. This arrangement includes: Full Score, 1st and 2nd Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba and optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set. Performance Time Approx. 1 minute 50 seconds.

Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside. The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

They are suitable for mezzo soprano and could also be sung by tenor voice an octave lower. They are among some of the most popular folk songs of Wales and sure to be well received at a vocal recital. They would also make excellent encore pieces. For copyright reasons, English translations are not provided, although some are to be found on various web pages. 1. Y Ddau Farch (The Two Mares) The song tells the story of two horses. The older one tells the younger, “In my day I was as good a horse as youâ€. But when I became too old to work, I was sent away to the mountains. She vows never to return to her cruel owners. This is an example of a macaronic song in which the lyrics use more than one language. 2. Si Hei Lwli, ’Mabi (Sleep, my Lovely Baby) In this pentatonic lullaby, a mother tells her child that their ship is moving away, the captain is on board, the eastern wind is blowing and the seagull is on its nest. 3. Canu Cwnsela (Wassail Song) The singers ask permission to come in and sing for their dinner. But they seem to have chosen the wrong house because the reply is: “I have no dinner or money to spend, to give you a welcome tonight.†The melody is in the Dorian Mode. 4. Robin Ddiog (Lazy Robin) The song, also in the Aeolian mode is about a robin whose little house is always tidy. “Open the door a little bit, so that I can see the sea and the waves†he asks. When the door is opened, the breeze sweeps away all the leaves from the floor. 5. Migildi Magildi “When the smithy’s door is open, we can see the blacksmith working.†The song describes the sights and sounds of the blacksmith’s workshop.You can hear all the songs in the audio demo, though they are played by an oboe rather than sung.

The words were written by poet Euan Tait about a woman carrying water in the darkness, accompanied by birdsong. The six voices are layered to create rich harmonies, building to a cascade of sound as 'the birds sing sudden rainfall'. The piece was workshopped by the BBC Singers. It is for professional or advanced amateur singers, but well worth getting six sopranos together to create an exciting choral texture. ID: S0.11897152: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year.
