By Mike Strand, ASCAPThis is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance: 1.You may come here to eat and to drink.Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. They have the moves to show off our licks. They came here to dance! Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by: Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why: The doghouse amps are turned up high. They get in there, and tear up the floor! And they don’t care if their feet get sore. 3. Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not. They came here to dance!4. Bridge again, then:Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not.They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,They came here to dance! This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. The work may also be performed with just the Piano and/or Guitar for accompaniment. What’s more, the Rhythm Track Accompaniment is available without the solo instruments adding to the already many attributes of this music that enhance its inherent genuine global appeal. This is critical because teachers, students and musicians worldwide are constantly seeking music of the highest quality that can be skillfully presented to the public while having, at the same time, built-in qualities both pleasing to the listener and the performer alike. Bach’s melodies have certainly stood the test of time and Jazz is without question internationally popular. That makes these arrangements truly worthy of attention from people, artists and publishers throughout the world. The composer personally has had great success with this work in many major concerts including its premier performance using a Flute Choir at a Civic Center Concert held in Syracuse, NY before several thousand people who triumphed the young musicians with a standing ovation. The melody by J.S. Bach used in this work is taken from the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe Band 9 and 1 Kammermusik BWV 1031- known as the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach which was published in 46 volumes from 1851-1899. A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.

More… Jazz Licks at Your Fingertips is a sequel to Jazz Licks at your Fingertips This study contains over 80 jazz licks/phrases in several different keys. There are progressions on the ii7 - V7 in both major and minor keys. There are also major, minor 6th and 7ths as well as dominant, diminished and augmented chords. As you go on you will find licks on flatted and raised ninths, augmented 11ths and 13th chords. Most important however, are the Application Exercises. There are six jazz etudes which contain chord progressions found in many of the jazz standards. You will have the opportunity to use the licks in measures that deal with the chords that you have dealt with in the previous section. There are parts where you are asked to fill in your own licks in between the written melody. All the material that you have just worked on in the the last section can be used in each etude. By the end of the study, you can improve on the enitre song. It is a unique method that I have developed over the past 50 years. If you follow the method and work on all the exercises as directed, you will take your first steps in the Real way pros play jazz. There is even accompaniment provided for each etude. There are mp4s that are available at no extra cost if you have a device that will play them. There is also accompaniment provided at the end of the book if have musician friends play along with you. The process for obtaining the mp4s is explained at the beginning of the book under Application Exercises.

The first track on The Temptations in a Mellow Mood, an album released as a crossover to white audiences, this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein tune is a great example of The Temptations close harmony skills. This is an arrangement for Big Band with Solo Male Vocal and TTBB, playable by intermediate ensembles and transcribed note for note from the recording. Starting in a Latin style reminiscent of Manteca, this arrangement is mainly in a big band swing style and briefly transitions to a jazz waltz in the middle section. Due to the vocals being featured, the horns are used sparsely and there are few sections where extended rehearsal is needed. Although the album itself doesn't break down who arranged this initially, it more than likely is an Oliver Nelson creation. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download.
