Published by Samuel Warren Hatch (A0.1025435). Piano Sonata No. 1 in E Major is the first series of concert piano works by S. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. III. A Reflection of Passing depicts the shifting aspects about death as a person matures. It’s a piece that came from a time of great loss and much grieving. It begins with an innocent, hopeful understanding of death, followed by a major tone shift, where there is an odd utilization of the piano: the performer sings into the piano while holding down the sustain pedal, which vibrates certain overtones, producing what sounds like a distant choir. The piece closes with a triumphant, hopeful melody, borrowed from a song written by S. Warren Hatch when he was in high school.Composer Notes- Be sure to ensure that the stage hands lift the piano lid before the sonata’s start, as the strings will need to be exposed in order for you to sing into the piano’s body during A Reflection of Passing. For that section (page 22) you will need to face and sing directly into the strings while holding down the sustain pedal for the entire page. If you are playing with the sheet music (don’t worry, I’m not shaming you) simply slide the music holder in order to expose the part of the strings that are closest to you. For this sonata, I encourage you to find your own voice in these pieces. Your own interpretation should align with how you most relate to the message/story they’re telling. This could be using the una corda (leftmost) pedal during lighter sections to further differentiate them, or having a heavier rubato to strengthen the impact of certain phrases. As long as you bring these pieces to life, then it has my stamp of approval.

In these pieces I opted for the opposite route, attempting to bring a smile to the listeners' faces.

While it is known as a river of woe in connection with the mythical Greek underworld, it can have positive connotations when the underworld is reframed as a place for introspection, transformation, and rebirth.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:This piece is intended to be performed without pedal, but in a legato style. It has an understated and modern quality that older high school and adult students may enjoy. This can be an opportunity for students to work on playing their eighth notes evenly, to strengthen their left hand by holding down the bass note, and to understand and correctly play hemiola. Only a single, initial dynamic marking is included in the text; this piece can be an exercise in looking at the overall structure and using one’s intuition to shape the phrases. There are a few places where fingering is indicated, but the fingering is mostly left up to the player, so that they can work with their teacher to problem-solve-especially if their hand size is small (like the composer’s). About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. As a soloist or sideman, she has performed at numerous music venues around California in an eclectic mix of styles, and recorded with a variety of jazz musicians, singer-songwriters, and rock bands. Her work as an accompanist spans classical, jazz, and musical theatre, receiving praise for her theatre work as a pianist and ensemble leader. French composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) has been recognized for hisoutstanding oeuvre of songs for voice and piano, mostly composed upon poems of theFrench poets of the Pleiade. After his death, the Leguerney Estate decided to allow thepublication of his instrumental chamber music. These works, many of which werewritten in his early years, are valuable contributions to the French chamber musicrepertoire, representing the 20th century from its early years through World War II.This Trio was composed in 1928, but not performed until December 3, 1932. Therespected French musicians Hortense de Sampigny (violinist) and Jacques Serres(cellist) gave its first and, as far as we know, only performance along withLeguerney’s friend and mentor, Thérèse Cahen, at the piano. The concert includingthis work was organized by the Société Musicale Indépendante at the concert hall ofthe Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. A review, in the Journal des débâts, reads:“We do not know this composer. Judging from his composition, whose variegatedstyle reminds us of [Cesar] Franck, of Maurice Ravel and of Spanish dances, he mustbe quite young.â€The same month as this performance, Leguerney’s father, Marcel Leguerney, died. Atthis point, he interrupted his musical activity in order to take over his father’s businessto support his mother and sister. He was not able to resume musical composition until1940, when the outbreak of the war led him to close the business.This edition is based upon two autograph manuscript sources of the full score, as wellas copyist’s parts for the violin and ‘cello. His first completed sketch as well as hisfinal copy are in the Leguerney archives. The parts, made by a copyist, were obviouslyused for a performance, and contain suggested phrasing, as well as bowings (whichwe have not reproduced). We surmise that the violin and ’cello parts were used for thefirst performance. We also think that Thérèse Cahen must have kept her piano score,as the copyist's score of it was not found with the other parts.We have added rehearsal numbers, and corrected a few notational mistakes in themanuscript.We would like to thank Jean Libermann, cellist, and Marion Larigaudrie, violinist,for their advice in the preparation of this edition.

An English equivalent might be Boxing Week. This piece is called this way because it was composed ... between the years! Concretely, on 31 December 2009 and 1 January 2010 in the small village of Worpswede, North Germany. Musically, the piece is mostly based on major seventh chords with their fundamentals notes related by thirds. The harmony has also a Lydian flavor which becomes most obvious in the central section. Structurally, is roughly A-B-B-A, whereby the reappearance of a previous section is quite varied. Yet, there are only a handful, no pun intended, I guess! of reasonable arrangements for piano solo. The Kocsis setting has a TON of extra arpeggios, mostly derived from the orchestral treatment by the composer. My setting here takes the most economical and stylistically precise approach to integrating the original melody and accompaniment into a single musical expression. There are NO notes that are not directly on the page of the accomp or the tune. Notwithstanding,the piece is by no means a simple one, given its key, and the composer's penchant for borrowed chords. So, we have done our best to make the altered spellings both clear and still voice and key-relevant. A nice four-pages-facing layout for a single-sided printer. A modest tempo is presented, and the piece can go faster if you have the time to practice it enough! New edition has some changes to R-L hand distribution, and three editorial fixes. MBB .

AMOUR LOINTAIN (LOVE FROM AFAR) Advanced Intermediate Piano Soloby ROBERT VAN HORNE9 Pages In 2010, AMOUR LOINTAIN (LOVE FROM AFAR) won 2nd in the Division 7 State Contest sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association Of California. After attending a piano concert in 2009 featuring several works by Maurice Ravel, Robert was inspired to write this piano work in the style of the Impressionistic French composers. It comprises lyrical melodies in mostly 9/8 and 5/4 meters and sequential patterns, using predominately notes from the whole tone scales. The left hand ostinato occurs mostly throughout while the right hand melody is heard in different keys. As the piece concludes, there is a brief reprise of the waltz melody that slowly fades away. The score is clearly and carefully notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings, and appropriate musical terms for playing. This piano solo makes a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals. Duration time is about 4:30. The violin part contains numerous parallel sixths, making this a fruitful study in double-stopped 6ths for the high-school or college-age violinist. Published by Graham Boag (A0.1131518). Reynaldo Hahn (1874 – 1947) was a Venezuelan-born French composer, conductor, music critic, and singer. He is best known for his songs – mélodies – of which he wrote more than 100, mostly composed in a thirty-year period from 1888 to the end of the First World War. Following the War demand for songs with piano accompaniment diminished and he turned to other forms, composing five operas with another unfinished.     We have three examples of Hahn’s melodies spanning his career, ‘Si me vers avaient des alles’ composed in 1888 aged just14. ‘A Chloris’ (1913) and ‘Je me souviens’ (1947) which was part of his final set of ‘9 Mélodies retrouvées’. These are all lyrical and highlight Hahn' musical voice. He had great respect for both Massenet and Faure whom he considered as the master of the mélodie and both are reflected in his writing especially his earlier songs.    In this YouTube link Michael Massong plays 'A Chloris'.

This arrangement transcribes the piano score as a Solo for Viola with Piano accompaniment. There is a separate solo part included with the score. The full length youtube performance is the clarinet version of this arrangement.Soloists at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are mostly straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing with subtle tempo changes. Since the main melody is played by the viola, the piano part is easier than the original. The theme of the original song Byeoljigi composed by Junhee Lim consists of a 16-bar melody, but this composer rearranged it to a 16-bar melody. the Korean pentatonic scale “Doremisola†is mostly used for the the melody. The overall framework is an introduction/theme and three variations/cadenza/finale/end. Through the theme, it creates a musical updraft until the second variation, and in the third variation, there is a relaxed atmosphere, and then a cadenza singing a conversation between a mother singing a lullaby and a baby enjoying in her dreams. The figure of the mother is the theme melody played with the G string, and the figure of the child is the cheerful high notes composed of the first five notes of the theme, “Mi re Do Re mi.†It then ends with a brilliant finale and a short ending. Attached music file is recorded by Violin, it's just for a referrence.
