Calixa Lavalle was a 19th Century Canadian composer best known for his stirring national anthem, O Canada. Meditation is a glorious lyrical solo in the romantic style, composed for the famous cornet virtuoso, Matthew Arbuckle and is about 4 minutes in length for advanced peformers.
This lovely arrangement for solo Cornet and Brass Ensemble by Angus Armstrong is dedicated to Karen Donnelly, veteran principal Trumpeter with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Instrumentation is for: Solo Cornet in B-flat, 2 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium/Bass Trombone and Tuba.
The short performance example is a beautiful performance from Karen Donnelly as cornet soloist with the Capital Brass Ensemble.

An original march dedicated to The Eagley Band, with whom I have a very long associationThe opening section is quite chaotic, as the eagles flap their wings and get ready for take-off. Then they are off with a run and a leap and we hear the first theme, a martial tune in the solo euphonium, with fanfare-like interjections on the cornets. At letter B, the tune is expanded to encompass the other sections of the band. Then at letter C, a new idea is introduced which has little obbligato tweets from the soprano and repieno on the repeat.The bass solo continues the military idea with aggressive fanfare interjections over the bass melody.The trio changes style completely and should be played as lightly and delicately as possible. The leaps on baritone and trombones should be clear and well articulated but should fit into the general texture rather than stick out abruptly.At letter G, the grace notes should be played by only one player in each section to avoid sounding like clucking chickens. The grace notes should be extremely light.

Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? Published by Richard Jones (A0.1026133). Until the 1970s the Minuet in G Major was attributed to the great Johann Sebastian Bach. For centuries musicologists believed it was an original composition as it was a part of the manuscript notebook compiled by Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena Bach, in 1725.Petzold was born in Konigstein, Germany, in 1677 and little is known about his exact birth date. Relatively few pieces ofhis have survived the centuries, but the inclusion of his two minuets in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, remain the most famous of these.The theme to the Minuet in G was used in 1966 by the American pop group The Toys, in their song 'A Lover's Concerto'.In this arrangement I have syncopated the theme and accompanying parts to create a jazz feel. From letter A the theme appears in the cornet and euphonium lines and then at letter B the theme is transferred to the horn section. Whilst the theme is in the horn section there is a counter riff in the baritones and trombones, and a simple jazz syncopation in the cornets. At C the key changes to the sub-dominant key of C and the back row cornets get the tune in a simple but syncopated form whilst a flowing counter melody continues in the lower instruments. Then at D the euphoniums, baritones and basses have their chance and the syncopation appears in the horns and interjections in the cornets. After the D.S the the piece goes to the Coda, which hasthe tune split between each of the sections of the band with a fortissimo climax.

Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert BandBy John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band. The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key. Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band.
