His suicide scene is one of the great moments for comic actors and it can take as long as the actor wishes - even up to 5 minutes. As a former harpsichordist, it occurred to me that some new harpsichord repertoiremight be welcome; thus I wrote the ‘Suite Update’ using the actual movements of abaroque suite. But I gave each movement a new twist, adding a whiff of Tango to the Allemande,giving the Gavotte some Rumba rhythm, etc. and altogether - I had a great time!But as my harpsichord is in dreadful condition, having been neglected for decades, I actually wrote this harpsichord work at the piano. And I have to admit that I LIKE it on the piano!!So here is the fully pianistic version, as opposed to the harpsichord version.To round off this book, I took four pieces from my two collections using the titles of Magritte’s surreal paintings to make a further 4-movement work, the ‘Suite Magritte’.

But whatever the spell and for whatever reason, the speaker makes it clear that she is held captive by a spell that immobilizes her even though there seems to be an impending doom. The speaker knows that something dreadful is coming her way, and yet she is unable to move. SATB divisi, celeste, crystal glasses, percussion.

Cradle Song for SATB Choir and PianoWords by: William BlakeMusic by: Russell Ronnebaum About the piece:William Blake’s serene language inspired this dramatic setting of his poem Cradle Song. The piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child. As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing. The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep. The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in. Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant. The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break). The final phrase of the piece is a slightly transformed iteration of the opening vocal phrase and is a subtle nod to Johannes Brahms’ Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht, more commonly known as Brahms’ Lullaby.Cradle Song was commissioned by Rincon/University High School Concert Choir in Tucson, Arizona; Directed by Mareena Boosamra.www.RRonnebaum.com
