Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s composition received a high level of praise from the British press following the work’s premiere by the Musical Society of London in 1863. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. The edition is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/inconsistent dynamics and articulations. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the influence of Beethoven. The Trumpet Polka, first published in 1856 as part of the Jullien Military Band Journal is a typical composition composed for and used as dance music during the Victorian era. It employees both trumpets and cornets, showcasing the trumpets. The form is that of a dance piece, with large repeated sections designed to be choreographed by a large group of dances, an activity popular at the time. While there is much known about Herman Koenig (1815-1870), there is much that is still somewhat of a mystery, like exactly where he was born and died. What is known is that he was perhaps the ï¬rst cornetist who was indeed an international star. Born in Germany, he became well-known in London as a featured soloist in Louis Jullien’s famous Drury Lane Orchestra in the 1840s. His travels took him to America in 1853 with Jullien in what was the ï¬rst major tour of a European orchestra in America. He also played violin, was a composer and publisher, a music educator, and he helped design and market a cornet, what is known today as the Koenig Cornet.

The Chalumeau Concerto by Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688 - 1758) is one of the few examples of a piece written by a signiï¬cant composer for this instrument. In addition to being a piece written for an instrument in transition, the piece itself is from an era when compositional style was in great transition. The Chalumeau Concerto has elements that can be considered either late Baroque period or early Classical period just like the instrument itself. To add to the strange development of this instrument, two additional spellings are found on the original set of parts. “Chalumeaux†and “Chalimeau†can be clearly seen. Instrumentation: Solo Clarinet (Chalumeau) in B-flat Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Cello Bass Harpsichord Oboe 1 Oboe 2 Bassoon.

It was originally published in London as part of the Jullien Band Journal in 1849 and uses music from America as thematic material in a manner in which Louis Jullien (1812-1860) did with his other polkas and quadrilles written to showcase music from different countries. French-born Louis Jullien was an international superstar conductor, composer and music publisher. Among other things in his career, he led his Jullien Orchestra on a tour of America in 1853 and founded the concert series in London known as the Proms Concerts. He also employed some of the biggest names in the music world at one time or another including Hector Berlioz, Jean-Baptiste Arban, and Theodore Thomas (founder of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).
