Selections from the famous opera by George and Ira Gershwin from the novel 'Porgy' by DuBose Heyward. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. For years it was performed more frequently in Europe where it was considered a true American opera than in America.

The Souls Of The Righteous is an anthem for SATB choir with an Organ reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. It takes its text from the Old Testament book of Wisdom. Sir George Elvey (1816-1893) was a British organist and composer. He was a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral and New College Oxford before studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Such was his skill he became Organist at St George’s Chapel Windsor at the age of just nineteen having been offered the post in preference to far more experienced candidates such as Samuel Wesley. He wrote prolifically for the Chapel creating many works that were only performed once andhave now been lost. Best remembered are his hymn tunes oratorios and anthems.

Sir George Dyson composer teacher organist and administrator was born in Halifax Yorkshire England in 1883. Sir George was very committed to composing simple pieces for amateur musicians to perform and thiscollection of three songs are a fine example. Dyson's texts were taken from the works of some of the greatest poets- John Bunyan Shakespeare Masefield and in this case Robert Herrick. The words are well set the music sounds fresh and simple and the melodic lines are attractive.

A beguiling 20-minute work for countertenor, women's voices and orchestra, Dream of the Song, George Benjamin's first work since his ground-breaking opera Written on Skin, was premiered in 2015 by the countertenor Bejun Mehta, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by the composer. Employing a reduced orchestra (two oboes, four horns, two percussionists and two harps and strings), the work sets verse by three major poets who spent formative years in Granada- two Hebrew poets of mid-11th century, Samuel HaNagid and Solomon Ibn Gabirol (sung by solo countertenor in English versions by Peter Cole), and Gabriel Garcia Lorca (sung by the female chorus in the original Spanish). This inspired pairing of texts creates a rich, melancholy and strange poetic conjunction, expressed most beautifully in the final movement which, overlaying soloist and choir, offers two simultaneous visions of dawn, conceived a millennium apart./ Répertoire / Choeur
