This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringenâ??s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.

This work is based on the 13th Century Dies irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works, including Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan’s Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises.

Dit werk is gebaseerd op het 13e eeuwse Gregoriaanse Dies Irae zoals we dit ook kennen uit werken van Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler en Liszt. Voor de titel van dit werk waarin hij het thema verschillende gedaantes meegeeft, haalde Jan de Haan zijn inspiratie in de derde zin van het Dies Irae, waarin verwezen wordt naar David.

Dieses Werk basiert auf dem Dies Irae (Tag des Zorns) aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das Thomas von Celano zugeschrieben wird. Bereits mehrere berühmte Komponisten, wie Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler und Liszt, haben den ursprünglichen gregorianischen Choral in ihren Werken verwendet. In Jan de Haan Song of David, dessen Titel auf die dritte Textzeile von Dies Irae verweist, wird das Thema zunächst einstimmig präsentiert und erscheint dann in verschiedenen Gewändern.

Cette œuvre s’inspire du Dies Irae attribué Tomaso da Celano, que l’on considère comme l’auteur de la version définitive de ce poème écrit au XIIIe siècle. Plusieurs compositeurs célèbres tels que Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler et Liszt, ont intégré des passages de chant grégorien dans leurs œuvres. Dans sa composition Song of David, dont le titre fait référence la troisième ligne du texte original, Jan de Haan présente un thème l’unisson qui sera repris ensuite dans différentes couleurs orchestrales.

John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) war ein englischer Geistlicher und Kirchenmusiker, der über 300 Kirchenlieder komponierte, von denen heute noch viele in Gebrauch sind. Der Titel Holy, Holy, Holy stammt aus dem Jahre 1861 und wird auch im deutschen Sprachraum als Heilig, heilig, heilig zum Text von Reginald Heber gerne intoniert.

This opening piece, who’s title is a mixture of the words ‘psalm’ and ‘Intrada’ is both festive as well as solemn. It was based upon the music of Psalm 149.

Psaltrada is een openingswerk dat zijn titel ontleend aan een combinatie van de woorden ‘psalm’ en ‘intrada’. Het is zowel feestelijk als ook plechtig van karakter en is gebaseerd op de muziek van Psalm 149.

Der Titel dieses Werkes verrät, wie es entstanden ist: Jan de Haan nahm die Vertonung von Psalm 149 aus dem Genfer Psalter von 1562 und schuf aus dieser schlichten, schönen Melodie ein prachtvolles, lebendiges Eröffnungswerk für Blasorchester. So wurde aus einem Psalm und einer Intrada also eine Psaltrada“, mit der Sie Ihr nächstes Konzert glanzvoll beginnen können!

Ce morceau d’ouverture, dont le titre est un mélange entre les mots psaume et Intrada, est festif et solennel. Il est basé sur la musique du psaume 149.

Il titolo di questo brano ci svela come è stato composto: Jan de Haan ha ripreso la struttura del salmo 149 dal Geneva Psalter del 1562, creando da questa semplice e splendida melodia un glorioso e vivace brano di apertura. Quindi, da un salmo e un preludio (intrada) nasce una Psaltrada, ideale per iniziare il vostro concerto.

The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and, commissioned by John Calvin, he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms, he made some four-part arrangements, which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later, Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections, and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed, are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael, which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts, written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice, the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows, played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse, which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.

Der Komponist, Kantor und Pädagoge Louis Bourgeois lebte im 16. Jahrhundert in Genf und komponierte Psalm- und Kirchenliedmelodien, die sich besonders gut für den Gemeindegesang eigneten.
