Andrew Watkin a réalisé un arrangement de l’Allegro extrait du premier mouvement. Le climat est sombre mais d’une grande profondeur sonore. Les courbes sont fluides et souples. The title of the suite Early Hungarian Dances from Gömör suggests the arrangement and harmonization of dance tunes, but this three-movement cycle is far more than that: in fact, the old court dances that provide the thematic material have been freely thought through and brought to completion. The composer has breathed new life into the 18th-century melodies, as Zoltán Kodály did with the Galanta and Marosszék dances, Antonin Dvo ák with Slav dances, and Johannes Brahms with those of Hungary. The chief virtues of the work are its colourful, varied instrumentation, the tasteful combination of its archaic style with the musical language of our day, and not least the fact thatits every bar is enjoyable to play and easy to listen to. Der Titel der Suite Alte ungarische Tänze aus Gömör lässt die Bearbeitung und Harmonisierung von Tanzmelodien erahnen, doch der dreisätzige Zyklus ist viel mehr als das: Es ist die freie Weiterentwicklung und Vollentfaltung alter höfischer Tanzmelodien, die den Themenstoff geben. Der Komponist erweckt die Melodien aus dem 18. Jahrhundert in einer Art und Weise, wie das von Zoltán Kodály mit jenen aus Galánta und Marosszék oder von Antonin Dvo ak mit den slawischen oder von Johannes Brahms mit den ungarischen Tänzen gemacht wurde. This work was written for the Donaueschingen Musiktage of 1926 and given its first performance there together with Paul Hindemith's 'Konzertmusik' and Ernst Toch's 'Spiel' for wind band. Until a few years ago the score was thought to be lost. This first edition reproduces the original Version but it has been carefully extended so that it can be played by the usual combination of Instruments now found in a wind band. The work is suitable for advanced wind bands and those at the highest level, and is one of the first original compositions for this form of ensemble.Hans Gal was born in Vienna where he studied composition and musicology and then taught at the university. From 1929 until 1933 he was Director of the Musikhochschule in Mainz. He then had to return to Vienna and he emigrated to Edinburgh where he was a university lecturer and conductor. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858 and performed the work's debut in Hanover, Germany, in 1859, to mixed reviews. The work initially began as a sonata for two pianos, then a four-movement symphony. Under the counsel of friends Julius Otto Grimm and violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms landed on a three-movement piano concerto. After its fifth performance in December 1861, with Clara Schumann as piano soloist, the work still received mixed audience reception.
