La publication par l'éditeur John Stark de sa pièce mémorable Maple Leaf Rag en 1899 marque le début de son succès et codife la structure formelle du Ragtime classique. Considérée comme l'oeuvre majeure de Scott Joplin, elle s'avère de nos jours concurrencée par The Entertainer écrit par le même compositeur en 1902 et rendu célèbre en 1974 par le film « L'Arnaque ». Dans The Entertainer, Scott Joplin essaye d'enrichir le ragtime classique par une structure rythmico-harmonique de la basse et établit des liens motiviques entre les différents airs, ce qui parfois, dans l'organisation de l'écriture semble extrêmement complexe.
Même si le ragtime obéit à des règles strictes dans le tempo et le rythme, The Entertainer par son air dynamiquement enthousiasmant exalte une flamme incandescente dans l'âme de l'interprête.
