Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close thework.

This fantastic, stirring fanfare was written with the composer?s wish that the young musicians performing it would fly into the bright future like pheasants. The first part of the piece is a fanfare, which is suitable for opening ceremonies, and the second part is a lush chorale-like movement. Die Fanfare, die sich wunderbar als feierliches Eröffnungswerk eignet, tritt hauptsächlich im ersten Teil auf, während der zweite Teil einen choralähnlichen Charakter aufweist. Beide Sätze dieser bemerkenswerten Komposition können auch einzeln aufgeführt werden.

Cette fanfare brillante est commande du Lycée de Kashihara dans la Préfecture de Nara au Japon. L’emblème du lycée est un jeune faisan. l’écriture de cette pièce en deux mouvements, le compositeur a émis le vœu qu’ l’instar des faisans, les étudiants puissent voler vers un avenir radieux. Les deux parties peuvent s’enchaîner ou, au contraire, être interprétées séparément. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’une œuvre courte, l’histoire y est décrite avec authenticité et légèreté.

Questa fanfara brillante è un brano commissionato dal Liceo di Kashihara, della prefettura di Nara in Giappone. Scrivendo questo brano in due movimenti, il compositore ha espresso il desiderio che gli studenti possano volare come dei fagiani, verso un avvenire radioso. Le due parti possono essere eseguite insieme o interpretate separatamente. Benché la durata del brano sia abbastanza corta (circa due minuti), il tema è descritto con autenticit e leggerezza.

The Latin title Ad Fontis means ?to the source?. This lively march in 2/4time follows traditional forms of march composition with a cheerfulopening followed by a somewhat more lyrical trio. This ceremonialgenre of old is often used in the army to keep up the morale of thetroops, however a march can also serve perfectly well to add luster toany concert and bring immense pleasure to the audience.

Ad Fontis is een vrolijke mars in tweekwartsmaat, geschreven door Harm Evers. De Latijnse titel van het werk betekent: naar de bron. Deze mars heeft dan ook geen ingewikkelde vorm, maar bestaat uit een opgewekt eerste gedeelteen een wat lyrischer trio - in de traditie van de marsmuziek. Dit ceremoniële genre wordt van oudsher in het leger gebruikt om het moreel van de manschappen hoog te houden. Een mars kan echter ook uitstekend dienen ter opluisteringvan elk concert - vaak tot groot genoegen van het publiek.

Crowns and scepters have been an essential part of the royal celebration since medieval times. In its original form the Suite was written in answer to a commission from the Farnham Festival and was first performed on 11 May 1971. I was, however, not entirely satisfied with it and did not pass it for publication until 1982, when I revised it in considerable detail. In its revised form it was first performed on 18 June, 1983, at Monash University, Melbourne. The music requires little explanation. The titles of each of the five movements indicate their character: 'Fanfare'; 'Dance', which has Elizabethan overtones; 'Popular Song', which explores jazz rhythms and harmonies; 'Ceremony' - a solemn chorale; and 'Finale', a light-hearted Rondo with fugal touches. The overall intention is simply to entertain both the players and their audiences.
