New Hampshire is part of the greater region of New England in the north-east of the United States. The introduction to this work is inspired on the nickname of New Hampshire, ‘The Granite State’, which refers to the extensive granite formations and stone quarries. We further explore this beautiful state through Market Square in Portsmouth, the nature park Franconia Notch, and the Kancamagus Highway. The work closes in a grand manner, with a bow to one of the most beautiful of all American states.

De inleiding van deze compositie is ge nspireerd op de bijnaam van New Hampshire, The Granite State, die verwijst naar omvangrijke granieten formaties en steengroeven. We verkennen deze prachtige staat verder via de Market Square in Portsmouth, het natuurpark Franconia Notch en de Kancamagus Highway. Le New Hampshire fait partie de la région de la Nouvelle-Angleterre dans le Nord-Est des Etats-Unis. L’introduction de cette œuvre s’inspire du surnom de New Hampshire, « L’Etat du granite », qui fait référence aux importantes formations de granite et carrières de pierre. Nous continuons notre exploration de ce magnifique Etat avec la place du marché Portsmouth, le parc naturel Franconia Notch et l’autoroute Kancamagus. L’œuvre s’achève de façon grandiose, avec un hommage l’un des Etats les plus beaux d’Amérique.

American composer Joseph Turrin is acclaimed for his work with symphony orchestras, classical performers, theater and film as well as his works for school bands. With Dedication for Band he brings a significant addition to the repertoire for mature ensembles. The work is based on five melodic ideas that reoccur throughout the piece, including an opening fanfare that introduces the main theme. With a concentration on climactic tension and expansiveness, this is a masterful and dynamic composition for band. The music of the Caribbean is a mixture of styles encompassing traditions that reflect the nature of its many islands and ethnic groups which inherited a multitude of rhythms imported by slaves from West Africa. Europeans brought with them Western-style melodies and harmonies, still used today in Trinidadian calypso, a traditional folk genre which gained worldwide popularity thanks to internationally famous artists such as the American singer Harry Belafonte (Calypso, Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Fascinated by this music which embodies the very spirit of exoticism, Roland Kernen composed Caribbean Calypso, a composition with softly swaying rhythms which followa gentle and subtle melodic line in a rum and cigar-flavoured atmosphere.

Caribische muziek kent talrijke ritmes die zijn meegenomen door slaven uit West-Afrika. De Europeanen brachten westerse melodieën en harmonieën in, die vandaag de dag nog steeds worden gebruikt in de calypso uit Trinidad, een genredat wereldwijd populair werd dankzij beroemde artiesten als Harry Belafonte (Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for concert band.

Philip Sparke bearbeitete dieses Stück des amerikanischen Komponisten Edward MacDowell, der weit über die Grenzen seines Heimatlandes hinaus berühmt ist. To a Wild Rose wurde seinem bekanntesten Werk, den Woodland Sketches, entnommen, einer Reihe anmutiger, unprätentiöser musikalischer Miniaturen. Hieraus ist To a Wild Rose das wohl populärste Stück, dessen Qualität Kritiker zu dem Urteil bewog, es sei so gut, wie der gesamte Rest von MacDowells Klaviermusik.

Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) est considéré comme le premier grand compositeur américain de l’histoire de la musique, bien qu’il refusait avec vigueur d’être associé un quelconque courant musical nationaliste. Edward MacDowell a toujours considéré que la musique était une véritable langue internationale, et ses œuvres sont fortement influencées par le style de composition européen, et plus particulièrement par l’écriture allemande. Compositeur adulé de son vivant dans son pays natal et l’étranger, il était également un pianiste exceptionnel dont la virtuosité a impressionné l’un de ses plus brillants professeurs, Franz Liszt. Edward MacDowell a composé de nombreusesœuvres pour piano, un grand nombre de lieder ainsi que plusieurs œuvres orchestrales. Mais l’œuvre la plus connue de son répertoire est une charmante suite de miniatures musicales pour piano, Woodland Sketches, une composition modeste et stylistiquement simple dont est extraite la plus célèbre de ces miniatures To a Wild Rose (“ une rose sauvage”). L’étonnante sincérité de la mélodie fit dire un grand critique musical que cette mélodie valait toutes les œuvres pour piano réunies de MacDowell.
