Of the three oratorios which Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed when he was music director in Hamburg, Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu is particularly intended to create splendor and effect with its use of magnificent-sounding trumpets and timpani. Bach liked this work very much and had it published in 1787, the year before his death. The following year the oratorio was performed by Mozart in Vienna. The text of the oratorio by Carl Wilhelm Ramler (1725–1798; better known as the poet of the frequently-set “Der Tod Jesuâ€) covers the Easter story of the disciples at Emmaus and the doubting Thomas, up to the image of Jesus ascending to heaven. The score is published as Vol. IV,2 of the C.P.E. Bach Complete Edition, edited by the Packard Humanities Institute. Carus publishes the vocal score and choral score for this work. The full score and parts can also be obtained from Carus.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, The Ascension for Organ is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. The Ascension was originally composed for orchestra by Messiaen in 1932-1933. The composer described the work as Four Symphonic Meditations and the sections are; 1) Majesty of Christ praying that His Father should glorify Him, 2) Serene Alleluias from a soul longing for Heaven, 3) Alleluia on the Trumpet, Alleluia on the Cymbal, and 4) Prayer from Christ ascending towards His Father. Messiaen arranged The Ascension for solo organ a year later. The first, second and fourth movements are arrangements of the orchestral version, however, the composer created a new third movement; Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ, which is its own glory. The Ascension is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

Unchanged, changing, or changed tenor/bass singers in middle school and high school may need a little extra help in finding their singing voices. Roger Emerson has developed a series of warm-ups that uses excerpts from classic rock and roll tunes that will provide the motivation and repetition they need to do just that. Each song features limited ranges, starting moderately and gradually ascending into the tenor range and descending through the bass range as needed. The professionally-produced audio tracks present each exercise with vocals so your Tenors and Basses have a model to emulate. Exercies are based on the following songs: Addams Family Theme * Theme from Jaws * Jump, Jive An' Wail * Land of a Thousand Dances * Mission: Impossible Theme * Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye * Shake, Rattle and Roll * Smoke on the Water * We Will Rock You.

As the light whose reflection in the water is sometimes broken by the waves, I used ascending and descending movement in the melody. The pervasive use of syncopation also enabled me to exacerbate the impact felt by the ebb and flow.

A standard solo and a mainstay for many competitions, Vintage combines Gillingham's intimate knowledge of how to write effectively for the instrument. This composition features wonderful soaring lines in the euphonium (ascending up to high C's) while at the same time mixing in a jaunty and highly rhythmic 5/4 section. All the technical aspects of the piece, while challenging, are well thought out and effective for performer and audience.

This gospel-style kicker features the bass section on the familiar spiritual melody. It's an arrangement crafted with tried-and-true techniques of the genre like rhythmic choral interjections, close triads, and ascending chord inversions. An exuberant add-on section shifts momentarily to bluesy minor, and a huge ritard at the end invites singers to bring the power. Raise the roof by performing with the lively SoundTrax or invite an improvising bass and drummer to play along. Premiered at the 2022 Missouri MEA conference under the direction of arranger Robert T. Gibson.

Beethoven's three piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the musical world the special importance that he assigned to them. He wrote them during his first years in Vienna and, along with his op. 1 piano trios, they helped to establish his reputation as one of the most significant composers of his time. These three sonatas - all of them small masterpieces - are arranged in ascending order of difficulty and virtuosity. The four-movement Sonata in f minor is often called the “Little Appassionata†because it shares with the famous Sonata op. 57 not just its key, but also its impassioned mood - especially in the last movement. Murray Perahia's fingerings have been tried and tested over several decades of performing these works, and offer a new approach to these milestones of the piano repertoire. Replaces HN183.

Parts available: KP00248 The composer writes: The slow choral-like music which initiates Adieu was the result of an image or almost a dream that I had. Without being able to explain why, I imagined a procession of people, maybe medieval munks, wearing large gray mantles with Ku-Klux-Klan-like white cowls on their heads, something like a funeral procession. The title Adieu is partly a comment on this funeral procession, but also used because the piece is split up by three slow-ascending glissandi, a kind of farewell glissandi which removes the intervening music. The first absorbing glissando is soft and removes both the slow funeral choral and the agitating figures in the first half of the piece. The second glissando is given only to the cello and crawls out from the elegiac melodies in the middle part. The third and final glissando is intense and agitating, and prepares the way for the end of the piece. This end primarily deals with the relationship fast - slow. This relationship is turned topsy turvy: the music gets faster and faster until it is so fast that it suddenly becomes slow, so slow in fact that it is very quickly able to become extremely fast again.

This is an extraordinary setting of a beloved text. Its many challenges will stimulate choirs of advanced abilities and will provide endless possibilities for interpretation. The piece opens with the male voices singing a long melody that builds until all voices have sung it. Dominus tecum is then set quite chromatically as a stark contrast to the simple modality of the opening. A contrapuntal section follows which reaches a broad climax at the words Sancta Maria Mater Dei. A lovely ascending phrase is repeated three times: Ave maria. The piece concludes with an Amen setting using the opening material and ends in the major mode. This is a major addition to the choral repertory and advanced choirs will find it a stimulating and refreshing challenge.

Bruce Pearson is best known as the author of the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method. But quietly and consistently he has become one of the foremost composers of quality and challenging music for young bands. Now Tableau joins such grade two titles as Tapestry, Renaissance Triptych, Proclamation, and Canticle as outstanding compositions for both contest/festival and concert programming. A tableau is a graphic description or representation of ancient days and Tableau, the composition, is its musical counterpart, written in the ancient F Aeolian mode. Sparked by a tranquil Andante trumpet solo, and followed shortly by an exciting Allegro flute solo, the selection ends with dramatic ascending scale passages for all instruments in the band. A performance must!

I wrote this piece with a darker sonority and an emphasis on lyricism, qualities that I associate with the viola. In the first movement, titled Fantasia, the viola begins with a quiet and free cadenza, becoming more passionate until the woodwinds join in dialogue with the soloist. Gradually the rest of the orchestra enters, exploring ideas from the solo cadenza while introducing a new theme that reappears in the last movement. The second movement is a scherzo, mischievous in mood with the orchestra and viola trading barbed jokes. The antics are interrupted by a brass chorale with embellishment from the viola. The scherzo then resumes with prominent contributions from the bassoons. The last movement, titled Nocturne, plays with different kinds of music associated with the night. A sensual and romantic atmosphere gives way to something more menacing and ultimately violent. After a climax from the full orchestra, soft strings and solo viola lead us into the coda, taking an ambiguous idea from the first movement and transforming it into a lyrical and heartfelt prayer. The concerto ends with the solo viola ascending on the crest of an orchestral wave of sound.

Eberlin's programmatic setting of the offertory Terra tremuit was written for the festive liturgy of Easter Sunday at Salzburg Cathedral, which in the 17th and 18th centuries was a center of the cultivation of the polyphonic offertory. Verses 9 and 10 of Psalm 76 (Vulgata 75), with their vivid description of the earth trembling and falling silent are Eberlin's basis for the offertory. Eberlin depicts the earthquake by means of a written-out tremolo of the strings, and by staccato singing of the syllables of the word tremuit. The Resurrection is depicted musically by ascending figures at the words dum resurgere. An Alleluia concludes the work. Score available separately - see item CA.2711000.

Carefully placed staccatos and well-chosen chord inversions illuminate the gospel style of this original anthem of hope. It's a perfect pep talk or pick-me-up theme song for whenever your program needs a lift. A solo voice becomes a duet before all the singers join in and grow with intensity. Several ascending key changes raise spirits, ensuring that the uplifting message resonates. Everything will be alright, everything will be okay, 'cause I can see a new horizon on a brand new day. If you don't perform with the kickin' SoundTrax accompaniment, be sure to add a groovin' drummer and riffing organ of your own. We dare you (and your audience) not to clap along!
