This present edition follows a double aim: to assist music students in getting acquainted with and growing fond of the music in Bach's time on the one hand and to prepare and facilitate teaching and studying Bach's small preludes, on the other. To meet the latter objective the more difficult dances and suite movements prove to be the most suitable. It is primarily a practical edition that follows closely the original music material. The original slurring has, however, been changed due to teaching purposes and in the interests of easier study (in several cases by omitting the original or by adding the most essential phrasing and articulation slurs). Suggestions for tempo,performance, dynamics and fingering have also been given. The eventually unusual fingering in some places promotes correct phrasing, articulation. Original ornaments that would pose considerable difficulties for the students have been omitted while the ones that can eventually be omitted depending on the rechnical skill of the students have benn put in brackets. In such cases an easier solution is, however, always indicated above the original in brackets. This does not exclude naturally that students capable of properly executing the original ornaments of these works without the distortrion of the melkody arches and rhythm should not play them in their full, not simplified form. Piano students on advanced level are recommended to compare the present edition with other, original text editions which disclose ornaments in their original form. As an example two pieces of this collection have been included in the appendix in the form they appear in the original text edition. This attempt provides possibilities both for the teachers and students to assess the nature and extent of editorial alterations. The name of the composer has only been indicated in case where it could be unambiguously identified.

Spirit of Endeavour is a virtuosic piece of music with a positive musical message. It tells the story of a wind band embracing hard work, friendship, musical excellence, love, marriage and birth, as well as the sad loss of cherished members. Composer Philip Sparke decided to salute the history of the Canadian concert band 'Harmonie de Charlesbourg' with a work that falls into two contrasted sections. One Vision deals with forming the band and the subsequent united desire to create an ensemble espousing the idea of musical perfection. The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band, symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream!

Het werk weerspiegelt het verhaal achter de Harmonie de Charlesbourg vanaf het begin in 1993. Dat verhaal kent vele facetten en behelst verschillende aspecten van het menselijk bestaan: hard werk, vriendschap, het streven naar muzikale schoonheid, liefde, huwelijk en geboorte, maar ook het droevige verlies van gewaardeerde leden. Componist Philip Sparke besloot dit alles weer te geven in twee contrasterende delen: het eerste, One Vision, verklankt Francois Dorions vooruitziende blik bij de oprichting van het orkest en de daaropvolgende wens om een ensemble te creeren dat het ideaal van muzikale perfectie zou omarmen. Het tweede deel, The Pursuit of Excellence, is een odeaan twintig jaar van grote inspanningen waardoor de Harmonie de Charlesbourg de nagestreefde doelen heeft kunnen bereiken: inmiddels neemt het orkest een trotse plaats in binnen het muziekleven van Quebec.

The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David, where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman, William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell<(I>, which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696, the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding.

De melodie van Old Hundredth is een van de bekendste in alle christelijke muziektradities, ze verscheen voor het eerst in Pseaumes Octante Trois de David uit 1551. De muziek wordt meestal toegeschreven aan de Fransecomponist Louis Bourgeois (ca.1510-ca.1560). In 1561werd de melodie gebruikt door de Schotse geestelijke William Kethe voor zijn parafrase van psalm 100. Later werd de melodie in Engeland bekend als de ‘oude’ versie - daar komt ookde huidige titel vandaan. Dit arrangement, met drie contrasterende coupletten, is geschikt als concertwerk of als instrumentaal tussenspel tijdens een kerkdienst of huwelijksceremonie.

Es erschien erstmals in dem Psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David von 1551, wo es als Satz für zwei Psalmen verwendet wurde. Diese Bearbeitung präsentiert drei kontrastierende Strophen und kann sehr wirkungsvoll sowohl als Konzertwerk als auch als instrumentales Zwischenspiel in einem Gottesdienst oder während einer Hochzeitszeremonie eingesetzt werden.

L’hymne Old Hundredth est une des plus célèbres hymnes chrétiennes de tous les temps. Elle fut publiée pour la première fois en 1551 dans le psautier de Genève Pseaumes octante-trois de David avec accompagnement du Psaume 134. The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The edition profits from Tobias Glockler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glockler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). Moreover, it contains the editor's virtuoso cadenzas as well.I have performed the Vanhal in Viennese tuning and it was my thesis topic so I am thrilled to see an edition that makes this tuning so accessible.
