COME ONE AND ALL! Come see the great Circus Bamboni! This four movement work, with flexible four part instrumentation (+ Drum Kit), will amaze and charm you like no other. The first movement features the band as it tunes up and prepares for the show. Then the talented trapeze artists make an appearance as they fly through the sky high above the audience. The elephants parade around the ring with their very own Elephant Samba and the clowns follow leaving you in stitches! A thunderous chord and lots of applause bring the show to a breathtaking finale.

Willkommen im Zirkus Bamboni, der sich hier in vier kurzen Sätzen, komponiert für eine vierstimmig variable Besetzung mit Schlagzeug, präsentiert: Im ersten Satz stimmt das Zirkusorchester auf die Vorstellung ein. Dann schwingen die Trapezkünstler zu schwungvoller Musik durch die Zirkuskuppel. Die Elefanten beweisen mit der Elephant Samba Musikalität, bevor die Clowns die Manege in Aufruhr versetzen. Mit einem donnernden Schlussakkord, dem verdienten Applaus, endet die Vorstellung.

Benvenuti al Circo Bamboni che in questa composizione si presenta in quattro brevi movimenti, composti per strumentazione variabile a quattro voci con percussioni. Nel primo movimento l’orchestra intona gli strumenti, mentre nel secondo i trapezisti si esibiscono in volteggi spettacolari. In seguito gli elefanti mostrano la loro musicalit con Elephant Samba, prima che i pagliacci regalino risate e divertimento a tutti. Lo spettacolo si chiude con un potente accordo, il molto meritato applauso finale.

Nature and landscape have been the dominant themes of much of Rhian Samuel's vocal music of the last ten years, projected chiefly through the poetry of Anne Stevenson, and in her most recent song-settings, the writings of the Pakistan-born Texas-based poet Zulfikar Ghose. His poem 'Conspiracy of the Clouds' describes how, the clouds having chosen to become invisible, 'Even the astronauts on the space shuttle / looked down on a cloudless America' as hurricanes ravage Louisiana and storms engulf Nebraska. An intriguing conceit in the tradition of magic realism, the text is presented as a scena lasting around 16 minutes, with interpolations from 'Haze' by the nineteenth-century New England transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. Thus modern fable and romantic nature-description are juxtaposed, and their interaction becomes the source of musical contrasts too. Thoreau's words are assigned predominantly to the vocalist's highest register, those of Ghose to her lower tessitura; and the suggestive and dramatic accompaniment builds tension steadily to the final ironic response of an incredulous American public: not one of awe and wonder, but the question 'Why weren't we told about it?

This new edition, in contrast to the array of Bach Cello Suite publications available today, has made use of all the five sources which have come down to us. The basis for this edition is the most reliable of the sources, the manuscript copy in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach. All variant readings from the four other sources are clearly laid out for performance. Cellists now have the possibility of rendering performances based on just one of the five sources as well as the option of combining the sources in a mixed version.

String Quartet No. 1 is a powerful and harmonically dynamic string quartet in four movements. It mixes both tonal and dissonant musical landscapes in an elegant way. The quartet may also be experienced as a kind of coming-of-age story. After the calm first movement’s confident simplicity of youth, the second movement reflects the increasing complications and conflicts of young adulthood, with fraught exploration, the discovery of possible romance, and new tensions now replacing the youthful calm. The third movement reflects on maturity and the experiences of love and loss, before the finale—a set of complex chromatic fugues—evokes the fight against fate and time to achieve one’s goals in life. The movement’s end briefly recapitulates the first movement, suggesting that ultimately life comes full circle as we see the totality of our experience.
