Antonio Vivaldi (1673-1741) was an Italian composer, violinist and teacher in the Baroque era. His name has become synonymous with the series of Violin concertos known as the Four Seasons , but he also wrote over 500 other concertos for various instruments, as well as dozens of operas and several sacred works. The Concerto No. 23 (RV 425) was written in 1725. Set in the key of C major, it was originally scored for solo Mandolin with String Orchestra and Continuo Bass (Cembalo). It has been arranged for Guitar or Mandolin with Piano accompaniment by the French composer Fernand Oubradous .

His concertos justifiably rank among the milestones of solo music accompanied by orchestra. In Viennese Classicism, piano music flourished thanks to innovations in the instrumental technique, and even Mozart fully exploited the advantages of the fortepiano action over the rigid sound of the harpsichord in his works.Piano Concerto No. 25 is Mozart's longest concerto. The harmonic structure, the continuous change between major and minor, the witty dialoguing between solo and orchestra, the strong contrapuntal saturation, the frequent use of the pedal point as well as the overflowing melodic abundance give the work a character all its own.

In January 1964 Bernd Alois Zimmermann interrupted the completion of his opera Die Soldaten [The Soldiers] in order to rearrange his orchestral work Dialoge for two pianos. Monologe takes up the original material but develops it towards a different direction: Zimmermann's collage technique based on quotations extends over the entire musical setting so that it is not only Mozart (Piano Concerto in C major KV 467) who has his say but Beethoven, Messiaen and Bach as well. Monologe is a piece for two pianists; real monologues of these pianists who, though simultaneously, [...] do not always play at the same time; [...] losing themselves in their own thoughts, as it were. -Zimmermann.

The C major Concerto K. 503 was held in particularly high esteem by Mozart, who, for example, put it on the program of his subscription concert at Leipzigs Gewandhaus in 1789, three years after it was written. This new edition is based on the autograph and also takes into account the first edition published by Constanze Mozart at her own cost in 1797.The editorial quality of the new edition is guaranteed not only by Schiffs sensitive fingerings and stylistically well-grounded cadenzas, but also by the Mozart scholar Ernst Herttrich to whom Henle has entrusted its urtext editions.Breitkopf/Henle cooperation means: Each work is edited according to predetermined standardized editorial guidelines. First and foremost among the sources consulted were Mozarts handwritten scores, being the most important sources. In some cases they had not been available when the previous editions were being prepared. Moreover, we know today that in addition to Mozarts own manuscripts, early copies in parts and prints also contain important information regarding the musical text.

Dimitri Stepanowitsch Bortniansky (1751-1825) seems to have composed the majority of his liturgical works and most of his Sacred Concertos in the 1780s and 1790s, before he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court ensemble in St. Petersburg. Heidi Kirmsse has added a German singing text to the five most popular pieces from the complete volume (CV 4.111). The festive Concerto no. 6 Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe is for Christmas, and no. 9 Heut ist der Tag, den Gott, der Herr, gemacht for Easter. No. 15 Lasst uns singen, kommt herbei is in the major key and is a very effective piece. Tchaikovsky edited Bortniansky's sacred works and is said to have particularly admired no. 32 O lass mich, Herr, mein Gott, erkennen mein Ziel. Bortniansky himself probably best liked no. 33 Sag, meine Seele, warum verzagest du? The work was sung at his funeral.*addition to the choral repertoire with works from the Orthodox liturgy/ Eastern Europe*includes the original Church Slavonic text underlaid (in transliteration).*effective solo/tutti alternations.

Thanks to its imaginative richness and sterling writing, Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 1 has advanced to the rank of a popular audition concerto. But when compared with the transmitted sources, the previously available first edition of 1966 proved to be filled with errors. Tobias Glockler, double-bass player of the Dresdner Philharmonie, now presents a reliable Urtext in this edition. Through his competence as an instrumentalist, he even goes considerably further and offers various performance possibilities: the solo part can be played not only in solo and orchestral tuning, but also in the historical Viennese tuning. The C-major version, which is offered on hire, allows performances in orchestral tuning. The orchestral material in D major (sales material) is suited to the other two tunings. A beautiful and easy to read score, elegantly laid-out and with illuminating and informative preface notes. This concerto is among our most beautiful classical concerti, lyrical and inventive. It is a great pleasure to see our classical repertoire appear in such critical editions. (Rob Nairn in Bass World).

Johannes Umbreit (piano reduction); Michael Schneidt (fingering) Two copies needed for performance It is almost impossible to tell from listening to them that Bach's extremely popular concerti for harpsichord were probably his own transcriptions of solo concerti which had originally been composed for violin or a woodwind instrument. The outer movements of the second concerto, in E major, probably written around 1738, sparkle with joy, while the expressive melodic lines of the middle movement, the Siciliano in C-sharp minor, transport the listener to the realm of his Passion music. G. Henle Publishers presents this repertoire standard in an Urtext edition with an extensive commentary. The study edition (HN 7381) features the complete orchestral score; the piano reduction (HN 1381) contains the solo part as well as a very playable piano reduction of the score prepared by Johannes Umbreit for practical use.
