A genre-defying collection of songs for female vocal trio, Songspin Songbook is a collaboration between Juice Vocal Ensemble and UYMP, funded by an Arts Council England grant. Described as “the 21st century’s answer to the Swingles or King’s Singers” (The Times), Juice have emerged as the face of a revitalised experimental scene for vocal music. Songspin Songbook publishes songs from their debut album, Songspin. The album was released on Nonclassical in 2011 to critical acclaim, winning an international Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Album in 2012. Featuring remixes by the likes of Camille producer MaJiker and Björkcollaborator Mikhail Karikis, the album was reviewed by The Observer as “eighteen immaculately achieved tracks, spanning Elisabeth Lutyens to Gabriel Prokofiev via folk song and avant garde, enchant and enthrall”. Songspin also featured the premiere recording of Elisabeth Lutyens' Of The Snow, which The Telegraph described of a performance by Juice as an amazing sustained piece of virtuosity. Songspin Songbook was edited by James Whittle and Paul Sild. Artwork designed by Christopher Leedham and Martin Scheuregger.

England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the _x001F_shermanâ??s song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England. A truly masterful fantasy on an English folk song, this piece shows the exceptional musical development found in many of the greatest classical symphonies. The fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo (ABACA) and features fine counterpoint and engaging melodies. This piece can be played in an orchestral and quartet setting and is both challenging and fun to play.My Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of Fife was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Life being what is it, she eventually gave up the violin and chose a completely different career for herself-though we are still the best of friends! I found the song in a collection of folk songs for children where it is called Rissoldy Rossoldy. Except for a few notes, the song was almost identical to the English folksong The Wee Cooper of Fife, which begins: There was a Wee Cooper named Fife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / He took him to wed a gentle wife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / She would na card she would na spin / for fear 't would harm her gentle skin.... The tune is rollicking and words are amusing, and yes, eventually they worked out their problems! The Fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo, which is ABACA coda, such as one finds in the last movements of some of Haydn's later symphonies. This composition may be performed by a string orchestra or solo string quartet. - Douglas Townsend.MyA Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of FifeA was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Ralph Vaughan Williams' (1872-1958) English Folk Songs Suite, IRV 16, consists of three movements, the first two of which are based on the folk songs Seventeen Come Sunday and My Bonny Boy; the third adapts four songs from the Somerset region collected by Cecil Sharp. The English Folk Songs Suite quotes the Christmas carol Dives and Lazarus, which Vaughan Williams later published five variations of for harp and string orchestra. Gordon Jacob, a student of Vaughan Williams, arranged this version for orchestra. An earlier version of the English Folk Songs Suite, written for military band, premiered at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, England in July 1923. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).1.2.1: 2.2.2.0: Timp:Perc(2-3): Str(9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.

A major addition to the repertoire of transcriptions for organ, the whole suite or any one of the movements will delight performers and audiences alike. Vaughan Williams's original score for military band of 1923 (orchestrated by Gordon Jacob the following year) was a milestone in the introduction of English folk song to the classical repertory which both he and his friend Holst championed. Over its three contrasting movements (two marches separated by an intermezzo) no fewer than nine folk songs are presented, in both lively and emotive style. Greg Morris, organist at London's Temple Church, has deftly arranged the suite, providing generic registration suggestions for a romantic instrument, but in the hands of imaginative players the score will readily transfer to organs of most styles and eras.
