Touted as Britain's second national anthem, this stately tune by C. Hubert H. Parry transcribes beautifully for wind band and would be perfect for concert or festival settings.By the late 19th century Charles Hubert Parry was probably the most influential figure in English music. His works were performed at all the major festivals and as Director of the Royal College of Music, London, he founded a tradition of teaching form which many of the finest British composers benefitted. Much of his music nowadays in scarcely performed but some works have retained their popularity and none more than his setting of Blake's Jerusalem, published in 1916 and instantly taken up as an anthem during the First World War. Today it rivals Land of Hope and Glory in expressing the spirit of England in music.

Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes are---in a direct or wider sense---of Celtic origin, in other words, they have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view. Yet, they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation and, especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. Annotation on Aignish on the Machair. The arrangement of Aignish on the Machair illustrates, above all, the melancholic character inherent in the harmonies of the original tune. A short rubato passage is followed by several variations over the flowing melody in 3/4- time. The short triplet passages embedded in these variations are quite demanding from the technical point of view; considering the key they are written in, however, these passages are not too difficult to play.

My Sonatina for wind quintet was written in January 2002. The three movements of the work (Moderato, Andante Sostenuto and Allegro con brio) are very much based in both structure and idiom on the classical tradition and gesture - the transformations in the first movement, everything kept in place in a tight classical form. The wind quintet's many commedia dell'arte masks are presented with humour, and the work recalls works from musical history where composers have been inspired by spontaneous popular gaiety. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was an English composer and teacher, who is perhaps best known for his choral music in the Anglican tradition.
A Near Minuet, however, was written for Clarinet and Piano, and is one of Howells' most charming small-scale works. It was composed in 1946, while Howells was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School, for one of his pupils there.

This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for fanfare band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.Deze oude melodie uit Wales werd in 1794 voor het eerst uitgegeven in Relics of the Welsh Bards. Dafydd (David) Owain was een beroemde bard uit Wales, hij woonde op een boerderij genaamd Gareg Wen (De witte rots) te Eifionyddin Carnarnvonshire, in Noord-Wales. In 1729 Bach took over the running of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, founded by Telemann, and continued the tradition of giving concerts at least once a week with this ensemble in Zimmermann's coffee house or, in the summer, in the coffee garden there. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here?

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back.
