The lyrics for As with Gladness Men of Old were written by Englishman William Dix (1837--1898) in the 1860s, reportedly on the day of the Epiphany while Dix was sick in bed. The tune was included in a collection of German chorales edited by Conrad Kocher and published in the 1830s. As a testimony to the flexibility of such music, the hymn is also sung during Thanksgiving under the title For the Beauty of the Earth. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all of the players in the music making, particularly by distributing the melodic material. All dynamics and articulations, minimally marked, should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven set a hymn to art in his Choral Fantasy. The work, about 20 minutes in length, is often seen as a precursor to the Ode to Joy in the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between piano and orchestra develops in the space of just 400 measures, before the soloists and chorus enter for the last 200 measures. (If necessary, the solo parts can be sung by members of the chorus or a semi-chorus.) In the main section, headed Finale (beginning with the double basses and celli), the theme from Beethoven's early song Gegenliebe (WoO 118, also used in the Ode to Joy) is presented, varied and finally used in the March in F major. The main source of the Choral Fantasia for the edition is the first edition of the parts, published in 1811 and corrected by Beethoven; alongside this an English edition of the parts published by Clementi (1810) has been consulted for comparison. The edition contains an English singing version in a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the 19th century. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1039400.

The chorale cantata Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn (O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger), which was probably written in 1771, makes use of a poem by Johann Georg Albinus on the 6th Psalm. The seven stanzas of the original are realized in seven separate movements. The work’s composer, Johann Ernst Bach, received his musical training from his godfather, Johann Sebastian Bach. He later served in a dual capacity as public lawyer and organist in Eisenach, then from 1756 as Kapellmeister at the ducal court in Weimar.The well-known hymn melody, which has also survived with the text “Mache dich, mein Geist, bereitâ€, can be heard in all movements. As a setting of a penitential psalm, the cantata is particularly suitable for performance during Lent and Holy Week.
