Dabei haben mich neben der handwerklichen Meisterschaft schon immer der Charme und der Witz fasziniert, die aus Haydns Klangen spruhen. Ob Frau Haydn tatsachlich so furchtbar war, welche Rolle die feurige italienische Geliebte dabei spielte und ob Haydn gar so arm war, werden wir wohl nicht mehr in Erfahrung bringen. Dafur ubersetze ich diese ungluckliche Dreiecksbeziehung auf Violine, Cello und Klavier, die sich auf chromatisch-wackligem Boden bewegen. Wird es einen Betrug geben? Wer betrugt dann eventuell wen? Und wer wird betrogen? Oder gibt es gar mehrere mogliche Konstellationen? Das entscheiden Sie selbst. Jedenfalls wird es nicht ohne Hysterie, Schluchzen, Erleichterung und fliegende Fetzen der (in diesem Falle) drei ,,Bestie infernali ablaufen. Es war 1996, als mir Christoph Poppen, der damalige Leiter des Munchener Kammerorchesters, von einem kuriosen Konzert in Munsing (Ammerland) erzahlte: wahrend eines seiner Konzerte mit dem Orchester in der dortigen Kirche gab es, fur alle hor- und sichtbar, eines der grossten Unwetter, das die Region je gesehen hatte. Dabei schlug der Blitz ein in eine Art Wahrzeichen des Ortes, eine mehrere Jahrhunderte alte Linde. Unter den Zuhorern damals: die dort lebende Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Diana Kempff. Sie war unmittelbar erschuttert vom Tod der Linde und schrieb unter diesem Eindruck einige Gedichte. Christoph Poppen wiederum war - wie in vielen anderen Zusammenhangen auch - genialer Vermittler und stellte alsbald den Kontakt zu mir her. Die Idee: am Ort des Geschehens, in der Munsinger Kirche, solle ein Jahr spater die Urauffuhrung einer Art Requiem fur diesen Baum, der so vieles 'gesehen' hatte, erklingen. Im Rahmen der Holzhauser Musiktagen mit den Texten von Diana Kempff und meiner (noch zu schreibenden) Musik.Es gab bald eine wunderbare, sehr intensive Begegnung von Diana Kempff und mir, bei der sie etwas fur Schriftsteller nicht gerade Typisches tat: sie stellte mir frei, aus den vorliegenden Gedichten nach Belieben lediglich Teile, sogar nur Zeilenfragmente zu verwenden und auch die Reihenfolge nach meinen Bedurfnissen anzuordnen und zu gestalten. Sie begriff sofort (und wunschte!), dass durch die Musik ohnehin etwas Drittes, etwas ganz Anderes entstehen wurde. Die Tatsache, dass wir Monate spater eine sichtlich bewegte Diana Kempff auf die Buhne holen durfte, freute uns alle besonders. Ihre Lyrik ist Ausdruck einer offenkundig zutiefst gequalten Seele und kommt uns oft wunderlich-versponnen entgegen. Einer zerbrechlichen Zartheit steht eine bisweilen fast brutale Harte unversohnlich gegenuber. Das Schubert'sche 'Fremd bin ich eingezogen' gilt fur sie in besonderer Weise und aussert sich in ihren Versen in einer Nahe zu allem Fremden (trotz des gleichzeitigen manischen Umkreisens des Eigenen und der eigenen Erinnerung), Abseitigen und auch (bei aller gleichzeitigen Skepsis) Ubernaturlichen. Dieses geisterhaft-spukige Element versuchte ich durch meine Textauswahl und mit musikalischen Mitteln in diesen nun 'Sieben Abgesangen' zu verdeutlichen. Das erste Stuck ist eine karge Studie uber das Verrinnen der Zeit, das Nichts; das Zweite beschwort den Regen (den heilbringenden) herbei, der dann spater - wenngleich mit entsetzlicher Wirkung - auch kommt. Den dritten Abgesang habe ich 'Tanz der toten Seelen' betitelt; es ist ein Zwiefacher, der jedoch durch seine duster-halbseidene 'Wiener' Chromatik alles Liebenswurdig-Oberbayerische langst verloren hat. Das klanglich vielleicht avancierteste und dichteste Stuck ist der vierte Abgesang, der ganz aus der Perspektive der Linde selbst erzahlt wird. Der funfte Abgesang zu den Worten 'Und wenn der Tod so kommen mag' ist im Stile einer traurigen Volksweise bewusst schlicht gehalten. Wahrend der sechste Satz in seinem expressionistischen Gestus nicht ungefahrlich das Monodram streift, ist es schliesslich die Seele (die ausgehauchte, die weiterexistierende?), die wortlich den letzten Abgesang uber die Baume und die Seelen pragt. Diana Kempffs Gedichte, der Enthusiasmus Christoph Poppens, die phantastischen Urauffuhrungs-Interpreten, allen voran die Sangerin Juliane Banse, haben mich zur Komposition dieser 'Sieben Abgesange auf eine tote Linde' angeregt.Die 'Sieben Abgesange' sind nunmehr auch eine Erinnerung an die erst jungst verstorbene Diana Kempff. Der erste Satz stark variierend in seiner Charakterisierung einzelner Teile, der zweite ein variiertes Strophenlied (,,Zu wild, zu bang ist's ringsum / und es trummert und wankt ja, wohin ich blicke, aus: Friedrich Holderlin, ,,Der Zeitgeist) ubergehend in den dritten Satz, eine Burleske (,,euer blut auf gluweinfasser / augen im zitronenpresser / ja so sind die menschenfresser, Konrad Bayer), der wiederum ubergeht in den vierten Satz, ein hastiger Spuk (,,ach! Fur mich war keine Ruhe zu finden). Deutlich getrennt vom funften Satz, vielleicht etwas uberraschend in seiner Schlichtheit, aber auch inneren (!) Variationen (Ouverture / Thema / Variation / Coda), Lyrisches Intermezzo (Sostenuto), Symphonische Nachklange (Allegro con moto).Immer wieder lassen sich Komponisten von Themen alterer oder auch zeitgenossischer Meister zu Variations-Zyklen anregen (Brahms: Handel- und Haydn-Variationen, Reger: Mozart-Variationen, Holler: Sweelinck-Variationen). Themen von Robert Schumann fanden bisher relativ selten Beachtung - (Regers Schumann-Variationen fur zwei Klaviere sind eine Ausnahme) - vielleicht, weil sie zu sehr in sich vollendet und abgeschlossen sind und deshalb kaum Moglichkeiten zur Veranderung enthalten. Dennoch beschaftigte mich schon langer die Idee, eine ,,Musik mit Schumann, Nachklange oder Erinnerungen an Schumann zu gestalten, mit der Absicht, ein heiteres, liebenswurdiges (und nachdenkliches) Werk zu schreiben, einmal ohne Experimente-, als ,,Divertimento fur den Normalhorer, gelegentlich behutsam verbunden mit modernen Techniken - nicht ohne hintergrundigen Humor. Der 1. Satz wurde inspiriert von den ,,Papillons (opus 2 fur Klavier); er gliedert sich in vier variationsahnliche Abschnitte. Die ,,Ouverture exponiert drei kurze Themen, die sich trotz ihres gegensatzlichen Charakters wie selbstverstandlich erganzen (Einleitungsgirlande und Schlussfanfare der Papillons und das bekannte Anfangsmotiv aus ,,Vogel als Prophet). Die Abschnitte ,,Thema, ,,Variationen und ,,Coda entwickeln und verandern das Hauptthema der ,,Papillons; dieses dominiert uber weite Strecken des Satzes und wird mit den Motiven der Ouverture kombiniert. Vielfaltig gegliedert ist das ,,Lyrische Intermezzo. Zu Beginn gewinnt ein Motiv aus den ,,Nachtstucken (fur Klavier) Bedeutung, taucht mehrere Male auf, von mehrtonigen b-a-c-h Clustern ,,gestort. Im Mittelpunkt stehen das Thema des 2. Satzes der g-moll Klavier-Sonate op. 22 (ein Mondnachtlied ohne Worte; Holzblaser) und ein Adagio-Gedanke aus dem Klavier-Zyklus ,,Kreisleriana (tiefe Streicher); beide Themen werden kontrapunktiert von zwolftonigen Strukturen und Klangbandern (Holzblaser). Die ,,Fruhlings-Symphonie-Fanfare eroffnet das Finale. Danach bilden sich uber rotierenden Klangflachen (Streicher) einzelne Tone und Intervalle, aleatorisch frei, verdichten sich, wie aus der Erinnerung auftauchend, zu Motiven aus Schumanns bekanntester Symphonie. Nach diesem zogernden Beginn entwickelt sich ein fast klassisch anmutender Sonaten-Durchfuhrungsteil mit mehreren melodischen Gedanken (Kopfmotiv der g-moll Klaviersonate, tanzerische und ostinate Themen aus der Fruhlings-Symphonie), die zum Teil in- und ubereinander geschichtet werden, bis auf dem Hohepunkt des Satzes das Schlussthema der Klavierfantasie op. 17, pathetisch-ironisch in den Blechblasern erklingt. Eine kurze Reprise mit dem Hauptgedanken fuhrt zur Anfangsfanfare zuruck; der Satz verklingt im pianissimo. Wollte man dem ganzen opus ein Motto voranstellen, dann die Schumann-Uberschrift (aus den Kinderszenen) : ,,Fast zu ernst - aber eben nur ,,fast. Himmlische namlich sindUnwillig, wenn einer nicht die Seele schonend sichZusammengenommen, aber er muss doch; demGleich fehlet die TrauerIn meinen Holderlin lesen-Stucken ging es mir darum, Wege zu finden, die gewaltigen Sprachstrukturen Holderlins so in die zeitliche Form der Musik zu integrieren, dass sie Funktionen der musikalischen Form ubernehmen, ohne in ihrer Eigenkraft (sowohl akustisch wie auch im Sinne expressiver ,,Deutung) im geringsten geschmalert zu werden. Das hiess zunachst: Sprechen, nicht singen! - Aber das wurde nur bedeuten, dass es nicht um die Musikalisierung von Text geht; ebenso wichtig ist es, dass es auch nicht um melodramatisch ,,erzahlende Musik geht. Sondern: Zwei autonome Kunste durchdringen sich auf diaphane Weise, ohne sich zu uberformen oder auszuloschen; es handelt sich um einen Dialog, nicht um eine Vereinnahmung durch Hierarchisierung.Sind wir uns selbst zu einem ,,Zeichen...deutungslos geworden, wie es Holderlins Anfangszeilen sagen, so erscheinen auch die Zeichen, die wir selber setzen, sich immer mehr einer Deutbarkeit zu entziehen. Mein Stuck, das den vollstandigen Text von Holderlins Mnemosyne integriert, stellt auf seine Weise die Frage nach dem ,,Zeichen. ,,Was ist dies? Klang? Wort? Schrift? Wie sind die Grenzen, die Ubergange, die gegenseitigen Beeinflussungen der einzelnen Zeichenregionen? Was liegt ihnen zugrunde? Worte und musikalische Zeichen bewegen sich im Medium der Zeit; Schriftzeichen erscheinen zunachst als Verraumlichung, aber man muss daran erinnern, dass der Vorgang des Schreibens - wie er in der ostasiatischen Kalligraphie zu hochster Kunst entwickelt wurde - auch zeitlichen Charakter hat. Mnemosyne - die Kraft des Sich-Erinnerns - schafft die Zeichen, indem sie Gestalten durch Wiederholung fixiert und so aus dem endlosen Fluss der wahrgenommenen Vorgange herauslost. Die so entstehende artikulierte Zeit schafft wiederum durch das Wechselspiel von fixierten und sich bewegenden Gestalten das Bewusstsein fur differenzierte Formablaufe. Der Formverlauf meines Stuckes zeichnet solche genetischen Prozesse nach. Der Horer wird schnell merken, dass die Wortzeichen oft einer zuerst erscheinenden musikalischen Klangwelt entspringen (ich stimme Walter Benjamin zu, wenn er sagt, dass die Sprache in ihrer grundlegenden Schicht expressiven - und nicht darstellenden - Charakter hat). Die Schrift auf der Leinwand folgt zunachst den sprachlichen Aktionen der Stimme, erhalt dann aber auch eigene Teile der Form zugeteilt, in der sie sich als autonomes Zeichen darstellt. In der durch die drei Strophen Holderlins notwendigerweise dreiteiligen Gesamtform gibt es immer wieder Abschnitte, in denen entweder das musikalische Geschehen oder die Sprachzeichen des Gedichtes oder das Sich-Schreiben der Schrift im Vordergrund stehen; der Komponist versteht sich also hier auch als ,,Zusammensetzer der in unserer Wahrnehmung so verschieden besetzten Zeiten des Schreibens, Sprechens und Musikhorens. Es bilden sich im Verlauf des 40-minutigen Stuckes auch Grenzfalle, wie ,,stumme Musik oder total musikalisierte - ihrer Verstehbarkeit beraubte - Textrezitation. Auch das Singen von Text - in meinen bisherigen Holderlinstucken strikt vermieden - wird als ausserste Moglichkeit gegen Ende des formalen Prozesses zugelassen. An einigen Stellen zeigt die Musik sozusagen direkt auf sich selbst. Es sind Formzustande, die ich in meinem ,,Shir Hashirim als ,,Koan bezeichnet habe: ,,endlose Wiederholungen einer zeichenhaften Konstellation, bei jeder Wiederholung minimal verandert - so wie ein Kalligraph sein Schriftzeichen bei jedem Malvorgang unwillkurlich verandert und neu schafft. Steht im ersten Teil der Grossform der Aspekt des Abstrakten, des Unsinnlichen im Vordergrund, so wird im zweiten Teil Bildhaftigkeit als Eigenschaft nicht nur der Sprache, sondern auch der Musik betont: die Landschaft, halb schnee - halb blutenbedeckt, die der Wanderer ,,zornig durchstreift. Am Ende dieses Teils wird das Schriftbild selber zur Landschaft, die der Leser/Horer durchwandert. Er wird im dritten Teil durch einen Verwandlungsprozess zu den ekstatischen Ursprungen des holderlinschen Dichtens gefuhrt, und damit zur explizit musikalischen Ebene: Die Totenklage um Hektor und Ajax wird zum ,,dithyrambischen Tanz, wie es Holderlins Schlusszeile entwirft: ,,... darum fehlet die Trauer. Es bleibt noch nachzutragen, dass ich den in der Stuttgarter Ausgabe der Werke Holderlins in drei Versionen abgedruckten Text in einer Mischversion verwendet habe: die erste Strophe aus der 2.
