Real deal a cappella jazz writing with great attention paid to phrasing, dynamics, expressive rhythms that sound unmetered, and bringing the emotional words to life. Be prepared to put in the time and feel the satisfaction of singing a lush and lovely ballad. The song has been recorded by a host of artists including Billie Holiday, Doris Day, Aretha Franklin, and Bette Midler, but Kirby's arrangement is inspired by soul artist Donny Hathaway's heart-wrenching performance.

It was a chance visit to a second hand bookshop in Nottingham that set me on the trail of Rossini's now well-known Duetto for cello and double bass. But the story begins earlier than that. In the 1960s I was studying the double bass at the Royal College of Music with Adrian Beers, who was at that time principal of the English Chamber Orchestra, on the front desk of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and a member of the Melos Ensemble of London (then one of the leading ensembles of the world). I was working on the 'Dragonetti Concerto', as most young players do, and I wanted to find out a bit about it. My teacher said he thought the autograph manuscript might be in the British Library, which was all the encouragement I needed to secure a pass to the Reading Room so I could go and see for myself. There, sure enough, I found a large collection of Dragonetti's autograph manuscripts, together with other bound volumes relating to his life. The papers had been lovingly collated and annotated by Vincent Novello, one of Dragonetti's closest friends, then deposited in the library before his departure to Italy in 1848, two years after Dragonetti's death. One of the volumes included a lot of letters about various engagements and music festivals, copies of orders for strings Dragonetti wanted from Italy, details about paintings he wanted to buy, and numerous invitations to private functions. The manuscript of the 'Dragonetti Concerto', of course, wasn't among the papers â?? we now know it to have been written by Edouard Nanny a century or so later. One name that came up regularly in the documents was that of Sir George Smart. Smart had been a violinist in Salomon's orchestra and had played for Haydn at his London concerts in the 1790s. As a child he had learnt much about music from his father, who had in turn been present at many of Handel's rehearsals when he was preparing some of his major works for the first time. Smart was also a fine keyboard player, becoming organist of the Chapel Royal in 1822. As a conductor.

Light, Line, Shadow is a response to Edward Hopper's iconic painting Road and Trees, a painting donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Daniel Dietrich II, and the first Hopper painting acquired by the museum. My piece is in three contrasting movements, each referring to and inspired by an aspect of Hopper's painting. The first movement, Landscape in Motion, refers to the dynamic movement of the landscape when traveling in a car and looking at the landscape passing by in the window. Hopper loved to take road trips, experiencing America by car, and in one of his initial sketches for Road and Trees, there was a car in the painting. The first movement tries to capture that moving landscape as experienced in a car in motion. The second movement, Brush Strokes, focuses on the darker forest in the painting, as the trees become denser and the technique of brush strokes creates deep layers. There is a spiritual aspect to Hopper's paintings, a kind of isolation and emptied out space, and the third movement, Open Road, dwells on that aspect of the painting before reprising material from the dynamic first movement.- Pierre Jalbert.

We all know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen---Santa's reindeer for his yearly trip. But it was Rudolph who saved the night on that foggy Christmas Eve, leading with his red nose! For over sixty years, this holiday song has been loved by all. This flexible setting can be performed by strings alone or with the addition of any combination of piano and winds. (2:10).

Little is known about the actual composition process of Lemminkainen and the performance and publication history is rather complex, resulting in a first complete printing of all the four movements en suite through the complete edition of Jean Sibelius Works only in 2013.In summer 1894 Sibelius went to Central Europe, carrying among others a plan for an opera freely based on the Kalevala in his mind. But during this trip he reassessed his composing: I think I have found my old self again, musically speaking. I think I really am a tone painter and a poet. As a result he abandoned his opera plans, but musical parts may have found their way into the Lemminkainen pieces which he started composing during that time. Definitely the overture had, it is now known and loved as The Swan of Tuonela. Lemminkainen became popular from the beginning and has attained a fixed position in the concert repertoire.

Melodic contour and lightness of touch infuse Mozart's music with a divine character unmatched by any other composer. According to Dvorak Mozart is sunshine. Richard Strauss proclaimed Listen to the remarkable expansion of a Mozart melody. You think it's coming to an end, but it goes farther, ever farther. Alleluja from Exultate, Jubilate is perhaps the best-loved of all Mozart's motet melodies. Give your band the opportunity to experience Mozart's divine gift of melody with James Curnow's sensitive and accessible arrangement today! Charming!

Hymn tune with words by Mary Louise Bringle and music by Jean Sibelius There are times in life that bring unavoidable circumstances and our limited understanding must be directed to God. Mary Louise Bringle wrote this emotional text for a friend who was dealing with her mother's Alzheimer's desease, and the frailty that mortal bodies suffer. Set to the tune, FINLANDIA, this sensitive arrangement provides comfort to those who care for loved ones in these situations. The anthem builds to a hopeful conclusion and climax proclaiming, All joys remain, unshadowed light pervading. No valued deed will ever be undone.
