The composer Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903), a friend of Johannes Brahms, devoted his work almost exclusively to piano and chamber music as well as lieder. Among his numerous works are also collections pieces of easy difficulty or with easy educational demands. They include the “very small pieces for string quartet†(without opus number). These pieces are seven miniatures of varying character, from cantabile to lively. Since they are, for the most part, technically easy to master, they offer the opportunity to practise chamber music ensemble playing: listening to each other, responding, coming in together, taking over and other challenges of the string quartet. Quartet sound itself can also be trained with the pieces - the ideal preparation for auditions and competitions.

Milhaud wrote it at Aix-en-Provence and it was premiered in Paris on 18 January 1923 by its two dedicatees, Louis Fleury and Jean Wiéner, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées,as part of the “Cinquième Concert Jean Wiéner.â€.

The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon.
Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England's best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer, coming from outside the musical and social establishment, which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5040500.

The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music, for Elgar's Coronation March and Parry's grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition, there was music by Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer, as well as by the Master of the King's Music and organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford's Opus 128, the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra, which was also made available with the accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However, such was the popularity of the Gloria, a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford's genius for church music, that it soon became popular as a separate piece, either with organ or orchestral accompaniment, and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Orchestral material is available on hire (ref. HL189).

Beethoven composed the ballet music “Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus†during 1800–01, commissioned by the ballet master Salvatore Viganò for performances with his Viennese company. Although the ballet was initially quite successful, with almost thirty continuous performances, it did not enjoy a sustained performance tradition. Its overture, however, was a different matter: considered almost a symphonic movement in terms of orchestration, style and structure, it was often performed on its own even during Beethoven’s lifetime. In general, previous editions of this overture relied on the first print as the main source. However, the authenticity of this source cannot be convincingly proven. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar incorporates various manuscript sources, including a set of parts from 1803/4 that has never been considered before. In this way, numerous discrepancies could be clarified.

In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music. This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.
