(TH BR) SKU: HL.49012027 Madame Butterfly. Composed by Giacomo Puccini. Edited by Kurt Pahlen. This edition: Paperback/Soft Cover. Paperback. Serie Musik. Classical. Text book/libretto. 288 pages. Schott Music #SEM 8013. Published by Schott Music (HL.49012027). ISBN 9783254080134. 4.75x7.5x0.636 inches. Italian - German. Puccini had hardly finished his work on 'Tosca' in 1900 and seen its first performances when a new potential opera subject attracted his attention during a theatre visit in London: the play staged was 'Madame Butterfly. Tragedy of a Japanese Woman'. At the beginning of 1904, the musical setting of this subject matter was completed - the work was a failure at the world premiere. Thereupon, Puccini revised it into a three-act version, and it was in this form that the opera about the unhappy Japanese woman began its triumphant progress.Apart from the Italian libretto and the common German translation, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction. $20.99 - See more - Buy online
| String Quartet No. 4 "chaconne" - Score And Parts String Quartet: 2 violins, viola, cello Schott
String quartet SKU: HL.49045639 Chaconne. Composed by Fred Lerdahl...(+)
String quartet SKU: HL.49045639 Chaconne. Composed by Fred Lerdahl. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. String Ensemble. Softcover. Composed 2016. 108 pages. Duration 990 seconds. Schott Music #ED 30174. Published by Schott Music (HL.49045639). ISBN 9781540004796. UPC: 888680710774. 9.5x12.0x0.37 inches. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music. My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach's D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms's Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern. My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the Bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded in 1919 Eduard Keurvels as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement. An impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. $22.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

About T.N.TAs a matter of practicality, when I was first asked to write a piece for the New York Theatrical Community Choir in 2005 by its music director, David Wolfson, I immediately decided to write a Kyrie. After all, I thought..., the text is only about four words and eliminated the need for a lyricist. Most appealing, however, was the fact that it would bring me one step closer to finishing the Mass that I was in the process of writing. If ever there was a case to be made for divine inspiration this appeared to be it. David Wolfson liked the idea and casually mentioned that there was another Kyrie and a religious hymn on the program. He also mentioned that the choir consisted predominantly of actors that sing.Like a bolt of lightning, divine intervention interceded whereupon I instantly realized that he needed a piece to wake up the audience, not another Kyrie. I took a breath and spontaneously began to talk through and improvise the concept of a piece that became the basis for Taxi.At that moment I was clueless as to what kind of piece I would write but it appeared to be a good idea at the time. David's reaction to my presentation was something like Okay,...I have no idea what you are talking about but let's try it. After a very successful public performance, he was delighted that I decided not to write a Kyrie and remarked that writ-ing a piece like Taxi for this group was like feeding raw meat to a pack of hungry lions. At that moment, the idea of doing a trilogy of similar pieces was born. For the last two seasons of the choir's existence I was asked to write a new piece and... as a matter of practicality, I happily agreed.-- Joe GianonoNote: Taxi, Noise, and Time may be performed separately. $2.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Programme Note CANTICA for cello and piano (1977)When in 1975 I had finished composing my Symphony no. 3 (begun in 1973), I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: The Year and Choral Hymn. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships, like proportional canons. For this reason they inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade: Frost Psalm, Winter Cantata, the tuba octet Now all the earth is white with snow, Canticles (and others).Cantica, meaning song or singing, was composed (forthe Danish musicians Hans Erik Dechert og Kjeld Hansen) as a instrumental little brother the long, polyphonic choral pieces. As in these the canonical melodies in Cantica drift from foreground to background, from cello to piano. The melodies are simple, diatonic and in traditional rhythms and the surface of the music in a way traditional. The intention of the composer with this easily understood expression is to lead the listeners ears to the many internal, proportional developments. The story is in a way hidden between the lines. In the myriads of rhythmic and tempo relations the Golden Mean (near to 2:3:5:8: et cetera) plays an important role, like in nature. Among the experiences giving by this natural phenomenon are - perhaps - the musical points to be found (?).Per Norgard(1997). $16.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Wes Cameron sets three of the stanzas to a simple melody and for the chorus adds it is finished, God's plan is now complete. Scored for SAB choirs, this is a beautiful and accessible anthem for use during Holy Week.

Per Norgard 's Gennem Torne / Through Thorns (2003) Harp Concerto No. 2 - Passage for Harp Solo with Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet. Premiered by Tine Rehling (Harp) and the Esbjerg Ensemble, conducted by Kaisa Roose at the Concert Hall of the Western Jutland Academy of Music, Esbjerg, 28th January 2004. Programme Note THROUGH THORNS has a duration of about 20 minutes, in one continuous movement, thus the subtitle passage. The work is scored for harp solo, flute, clarinet and string quartet. The title is borrowed from the lines from an old Virgin Mary Hymn: Mary wanders through thorns, a hymn which ends with the following line: then roses grew forth amongst thethorns. I only came across the poem after finishing the composition, the passage of which is a journey of sometimes dramatic events, concluding with a rose-blooming, as does the hymn. For THROUGH THORNS to borrow its title from a Virgin Mary Hymn has to do with the musical material and current of the piece, which brings motives from an earlier choral piece of mine, FLOS UT ROSA (Latin for a flower like a rose), and the rose in question is of course the one which grew forth when the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Infant Jesus in a hitherto unheard-of fashion, a NOVA GENITURA (new birth), which is the title of another work of mine that also derives its material from my original rose-melody from 1975. THROUGH THORNS is dedicated to Tine Rehling, and together with her I have tried to expand the sonorities of the harp, by exploring existing techniques and their more remote regions, in order to gain access to new territory and new soundscaoes, as realised by the constantly experimentally-minded and virtuoso player.
