The Baccanale is a genre of traditional Italian choral song without instrumental accompaniment. In most cases it is sung by two tenors and a bass. Most of the anonymous song are in a straightforward, homophonic-syllabic style. These songs are often at carnival time and are jocular in content, with a playful, ironic touch and they contain many erotic allusions. In addition to the Italian text of the 12 settings, sometimes in dialect, German singing texts are also included.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. The cantata Nur jedem das Seine (Do justice to all men) BWV 163, for the last Sunday of the Church Year 1714/15, belongs among to those chamber music works which Bach composed for the Weimar Schlosskirche. The instruments are limited to strings, although two obbligato violoncellos are included which together with the solo bass singer and the continuo form a bass quartet unique in Bach's works. The final chorale of the cantata is handed down only as a fragment and was newly reconstructed for our edition by Thomas Riegler. Score available separately - see item CA.3116300.

A Hymn for the Days after Christmas is a simple setting of a thoughtful text reflecting on the quiet aftermath of Christmas. It is designed to accomodate a variety of forces. It may be sung with unison voices throughout with optional additions of a soloist, C instrument and descant. It may be sung with two voices. Verse 2 has an optional harmony in the treble voice that may be sung or played by a C instrument or both. Verse 3 presents a countermelody that may be sung as solo or with the melody.
