A driving composition from Sean O'loughlin,?Commence!?begins with a spirited theme that oscillates between triple and duple meter. After developing into a heartfelt lush brass chorale, the lilting theme returns again. The composition concludes with a dramatic return of the B theme and a rousing finale. A beautiful piece,?Commence!?is a?strong choice for any contest or festival.
Commence! was commissioned by the Lynden High School Class 2017-2019 and the Lynden, WA Community, and is dedicated to Steve Herrick in celebration of his retirement. Mr. Herrick and I first collaborated on a commission in 2006, and I was immediately taken by the community and the music program in Lynden. It is truly one of the most beautiful places in the country and full of musical inspiration at every turn.
This piece is a loving tribute to Mr. Herrick and his amazing contribution to the students of Lynden for over thirty years. The music begins with a spirited section oscillating between 6/8 and 2/4 time. It should maintain a pulsing feeling throughout. The main melody appears at m. 25 and has a lilting, reminiscing quality to it. After some further development, it moves to a B-section at m. 41 with some warm brass passages. The woodwinds should soar over the top with their counter line. The lower voices take over the melody at m. 59. The harmony becomes more discordant at m. 71 with passages trading between the brass and woodwinds.
This tension releases into a slow section that features a flowing, heartfelt melody. This builds to the big moment at m. 112. The timpani ushers us back to the 6/8, 2/4 section. The melody is now accompanied by some flowing counterpoint at m. 153 which leads to the B-section again at m. 169. This time the woodwinds take the lead and the brass provide the counter line. A final big moment at m. 194 is the culmination and high point of the composition. A brief fast section puts a bow on the piece for a rousing finale.

Equus, Latin for horse, takes us on a thrilling ride on one of these magnificent animals. Wood blocks help create the sound of the horse as the ensemble comes along for the ride. A serene section at the same tempo almost seems to slow the ride down, so listeners can take the time to appreciate the scenery around them. The opening material then returns as the piece comes to a strong conclusion.

In 1979, Dan Hartman's disco classic, Relight My Fire, occupied the top slot of the US dance charts for six weeks. In 1993, the song was back at No. 1 reworked and sung by British boyband, Take That. Both of these versions inspired Peter Kleine Schaars in his arrangement of Relight My Fire for concert band. Alcazar is a dynamic piece with a definite Spanish flair.  Using changing meters and syncopated rhythms in its Allegro introduction, the piece continues this vitality into its main theme alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures.  Alcazar should prove to be a favorite of your student musicians as well as your audiences.  This is the perfect vehicle for concert and contest performance.Alcazar is a concert band work commissioned by the Cortland High School Concert Band, Richard B. Eleck, conductor, of the Cortland Enlarged City School District, Cortland, N.Y.  Premiered on June 1, 2017, Alcazar is a dynamic piece with a definite Spanish flair.  Using changing meters and syncopated rhythms in its Allegro introduction, the piece continues this vitality into its main theme alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures.  This opening theme then moves to a secondary theme largely in 5/4, first presented in the woodwinds, followed by a tutti section finishing with a punctuated conclusion to this Allegro.  The clarinets then take us into a melodic Andante middle section, using quarter-note triplets as its rhythmic motive. As this builds to a climax, we are moved into a return to the 5/4 Allegro heard earlier in the piece. As it seems to come to an end, a sudden use of the alternating 4/4, 6/8 earlier motive returns and takes us through an extended ending with a dynamic conclusion. Alcazar should prove to be a favorite of your student musicians as well as your audiences. This is the perfect vehicle for concert and contest performance.

Take an imaginative departure from the typical band piece with this highly programmatic work. Depicting futuristic travel, the music takes the audience to a time when matter is broken down, beamed across space, and then reassembled elsewhere. Your students and audience will agree with Einstein, who said, The greatest scientists are artists as well..

Otto M. Schwarz composed Fire & Ice for a symphonic rock project commissioned by the national music schools of the Austrian cities of Imst and Pitztal. In these cities, winter tourism plays an important role in the economy with spectacular weekly displays by winter sportsmen and women. The performances of the freestyle acrobats take place in the evening and draw huge crowds. Using torches and other pyrotechnics, these acrobats entertain the audience by means of fire, lights, snow, ice and acrobatics. This piece makes a perfect opening or final work for any concert. Hop on the plane, it's time to fly! This short suite of descriptive pieces takes the ensemble on a brief ride through the sky. Hear the sounds of the engine starting, the take off, the beauty and solace of the clouds from above, the nervousness of the descent, and the excitement and joy of arriving at our destination.Lift Off! is a short suite of descriptive pieces, all inspired by a short flight from Manchester, England to Brussels. In the first movement we hear the engine start, and after the plane has moved into position, it takes off. The second movement depicts the beautiful view of the clouds from above. It all seems timeless and you don't even feel as if you are moving. The last movement starts nervously (I'm not a great flier!), as the plane begins its descent from the sky. However, as we land safely back on earth, the piece ends in a flurry of excitement and triumph, returning to a theme heard in the first movement.

Take an imaginary flight on the ever-graceful winged-horse Pegasus! Using just six notes, this work manages to capture the grandeur of this mythical creature through the triumphant melodies that are passed around the ensemble. Harmonies are surprisingly rich for a work at this level and make the piece sound much harder than it really is. Fabulous! In Greek mythology, Pegasus was the winged horse-god son of Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa. During his life, he carried thunderbolts for the god Zeus and was ridden by Eos, the goddess of dawn. Today, the word pegasus has come to refer to any winged horse, and the symbol endures as one of endless fascination. The music is quite lively in nature, and portrays an imaginary flight of the ever-graceful equine of myth. The introduction takes us up-up-and-away in the form of a bright trumpet fanfare. The melody is then played by lower instruments, depicting peril during flight. The full ensemble then comes together, giving a picture of the winged wonder in all his glory leading to a thrilling finish.
