Sir Arnold Bax composed in a style that blended Romantic, Impressionist and Celtic flavors together in a brilliant way. Beethoven's Romance in F Opus 50 has been a staple of Violinists for over 210 years, having been written in 1798. The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Euphonium repertoire.
Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

Impromptu is a piano work which Dvorak wrote in 1883 at the behest his friend Vaclav Juda Novotny to be inserted as a supplement into his music magazine. It has an A-B-A form containing some very beautiful melodies and much expression. The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Low Brass world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Trombone Concerto for Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial.
