Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) composed this second (Op. 39) of two sets of piano études in 1917. The title Études-Tableaux translates as study pictures. But while the works were inspired by some visual stimuli, Rachmaninoff did not disclose what those were, preferring to let [the listener] paint for themselves what each of the nine tableaux's most suggests. Henle (HL.51481206). UPC: 888680012991. 9.0x12.0x0.147 inches. Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the “work of an old manâ€. The composerÂ’s variations on the theme “La folia†(taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano. He once drily said to a friend, “All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the themeâ€. Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing “la folia†– i.e. the “madnessâ€? Why not seefor yourself! Piano solo (Piano Solo) - Henle Level 7 SKU: HL.51481279 Piano Solo. Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Edited by Dominik Rahmer. Sheet Music. Paperbound. Henle Music Folios. Classical. Softcover. 11 pages. G. Henle #HN1279. Published by G. Henle (HL.51481279). ISBN 9790201812793. UPC: 888680625603. 9.25x12.25x0.06 inches. Alongside HN 1264 (the Etude in e flat minor op. 39,5), we are now offering the Etude in C major in a single edition, taken from our much-loved complete edition of the 17 Études-Tableaux. Rachmaninoff greatly valued this work, often included it in his concert programmes and also recorded it. A longing melody unfolds over a simple accompaniment. This charming piece that alternates between major and minor is a good technical exercise for the crossing over of the hands, but does not contain nearly as many difficulties as Rachmaninoff's other etudes and is thus also manageable by advanced amateurs. They will be aided in the Henle Urtext edition by the helpful fingerings provided by the virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin. UPC: 196288199489. 9.0x12.0x0.93 inches. Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952) continued the late-Romantic piano tradition with great melodic talent. After studying in St. Petersburg with Anatoly Lyadov and in Leipzig with the Liszt pupil Alfred Reisenauer, the native Ukrainian settled in Berlin. Political times blocked his career several times. Only in 1945 he was able to regain his footing in Vienna. The Fantasy Pieces for Piano op. 61 were to be printed in 1949 by the music publishers Benjamin, but again the political circumstances were not favorable for Bortkiewicz. In 2013, the manuscript was discovered in the Saxon State Archive Leipzig. This first edition finally makes Bortkiewicz's highly pianistic pieces accessible. The fantasy pieces do not deny the role models Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky and bribe with Slavic tinted melancholy, paired with Viennese charm. $26.99 - See more - Buy online

Piano SKU: BT.EMBZ12001 Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Book Only. Composed 1981. 4 pages. Editio Musica Budapest #EMBZ12001. Published by Editio Musica Budapest (BT.EMBZ12001). Vocalise, for soprano (or tenor) voice with piano accompaniment, came into being in 1910 as the final piece in Rachmaninov's Op. 34 song series. Most of the songs were tailored to suit the personalities of various outstanding Russian singers (including Chaliapin), and dedicated to them. An interesting feature of Vocalise, which was written for the soprano Antonina Nezhdanova, is that, as its title indicates, the vocal solo has no text: the performer can sing it through on any one vowel of her choice. This song became one of the composer's most popular pieces, and countless arrangements have been made of it (for orchestra, for various chamber ensembles, for violin, for cello, for almost every kind of brass instrument, for clarinet, for guitar, for harmonica, even for cello orchestra!). One of the most successful transcriptions for solo piano, first published in 1981, is the work of the world-famous Hungarian concert pianist, conductor and composer, Zoltán Kocsis. $8.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

A global success shortly after he first performed it in 1892, the Prelude has become a rite of passage for advancing pianists. Its dynamic chordal passages, slow-building middle section, and clanging finale bring forth the full power of the instrument, solidifying the Prelude's place in the repertoire. In preparing the urtext edition, Reutter and Franke have consulted the autograph and first print, as well as Rachmaninov's own recordings of the piece. $7.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
