Randall Giles is well-known for the unique blend of old and new that he brings to his compositions. This set of two carols follows in this tradition having both a reminiscence of early English carols with a mildly contemporary harmonic style. The first carol Jesu, fili virginis sets the Latin text in four parts, while an English text is used for the verses. The verses can be sung as a solo or by the sopranos. The second carol Jesu, save us all by thy virtue is in three verses set in a constantly changing meter. The vocal writing is in the middle of the range, retaining the intimacy of expression for these carols. This set should find a welcome place in carol services and concerts.

This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, László Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearingeven in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space- special work at the same time.

The anonymously-penned 'Tom O'Bedlam' is one of the best known examples of c.17th mad-song poetry. Part saga, part stream-of-consciousness, Tom recounts his descent to madness by virtue of his libidinous lifestyle and speaks of his life begging on the streets of London. The text conveys wit, anger, sexual bravado, fear and boastfulness but each strophe is capped with the shameful, pitiful refrain of Tom's begging call Any food, any feeding?. These contrasting moods lend themselves wonderfully to a musical setting, offering both singer and chamber orchestra the opportunity to express the whole gamut of musical coloring, from the most intimate utterances of Tom's begging call, to his rage all, illustrated richly by the chamber orchestra within which each player plays a 'solo', active part in the storytelling.

Johann Michael Haydn's oeuvre includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three descants, composed for his dear choirboys of the Salzburg 'Kapellhaus'. There is no greater virtue befitting to Mankind than faith, which manifested, doth friendship firmly bind. This verse was written by Simon Dach, the leader of the Konisberg circle of poets, during the Thirty Years' War, and a little later was set to music by Heinrich Albert. The anxieties and tribulations of the period are reflected in the songs and make it particularly applicable to us as survivors of the strife and disorder of our own day. Thus, Harald Genzmer has adopted it as the cantus firmus of his Prologue for Orchestra, in which we are reminded of it throughout, in its original form, in inversion, fanfare introduction, funeral march, intermezzo and final allegro.
