This Canzon was originally included as part of the collection Canzoni per sonare con ogni sorte di stromenti, a volume of 36 canzoni by 13 different composers, first published in 1608. The publisher, Alessandro Raverii, was based in Venice, and though he only printed music between 1606 and 1609, more than 50 of his volumes have survived until today. This Canzon à 16 for four SATB choirs, has been arranged here for clarinet choir by Matt Johnston. It can be performed as a clarinet choir or as a quadruple clarinet quartet.

Giovanni Gabrieli - Canzon Septimi et Octave Toni a 12 from 'Sacrae Symphoniae', Book 1, for Clarinet Choir, arranged by Andrew Seigel. Giovanni Gabrieli was an Italian composer and organist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was born in Venice, where he trained as a musician and composer, initially studying with his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, who was a prominent musician and composer in the city. Gabrieli eventually succeeded his uncle as the organist and composer at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he worked for most of his career. Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae is a collection of sacred instrumental music that was published in Venice in 1597 which includes canzonas, sonatas, and motets, all of which were composed for the unique acoustics of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The Sacrae Symphoniae is an important work in the development of instrumental music, as it represents a shift away from vocal music and towards the use of instruments in sacred music. The collection features a range of different instrumental combinations, including brass, strings, and organ, and often employs multiple choirs or groups of instruments to create a rich, complex sound.

Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla (c. 1590-1664) was a Spanish-born Mexican composer of the Renaissance period. Although born in Málaga, Spain, he moved to Puebla, Mexico in 1620, and was later appointed maestro de capilla of the Puebla Cathedral in 1628. This Ave Regina for double choir (SSAATTBB), has been arranged here for clarinet choir by Matt Johnston. It can be performed as a clarinet choir or as a double clarinet quartet.

A 'hayashi' is a group of performers who provide musical accompaniment for Japanese Noh or kabuki theatre. In Noh, they are purely instrumentalists; the type of instruments featured and the order in which they sit on stage follow established practices. The leftmost performer plays a small taiko, set on a stand before him, with two drumsticks. To his right is the ōtsuzumi hip drum, followed by the kotsuzumi shoulder drum, and the Noh flute. In kabuki, a number of shamisen players are added, along with, depending on the play, taiko drums of various sizes, various types of flutes, and other instruments, including a myriad of devices for sound effects. This composition for clarinet choir includes Eb clarinet, 3 Bb clarinets, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contra alto and contrabass clarinets and optional percussion.

Patrick Hiketick is a Belgian pianist and composer. As a composer he worked for nearly all theatre companies in Flanders and he wrote over a 100 different theatre plays, amongst which the complete oeuvre of Molière and Shakespeare. He was also the musical director for all Brecht plays for KNS theatre in Antwerp, where he worked as the home composer for 10 years. He than became the musical coordinator for the Royal Ballet of Flanders and he wrote several ballet compositions for symphony orchestra. He has his own close-harmony and jazz trio, and he works freelance as a composer and as artistic director in several musical productions. He composed many clarinet works for the Flanders Clarinet Quartet, and was honoured in Japan with concerts completely dedicated to his works. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the most common English title of the 10th and last movement of the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben', BWV 147 (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1716 and 1723. Today, it is often performed at wedding ceremonies as well as during Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter, slowly and reverently. This is, however, in contrast to the effect suggested by Bach in his original scoring for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuo. The music's wide popularity has led to numerous arrangements and transcriptions such as the present one for clarinet octet or choir by Prof. Hideaki Iwai.

Hans Aerts (°1958) studied at the conservatory of Antwerp (clarinet), the conservatory of Brussels (counterpoint and fugue) and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (composition).
