Reflective and commemorative in nature, the poem speaks to themes of remembrance and our shared connections to humanity translated through the natural world. Pickthall pairs anthropomorphized images of nature against the impacts of human violence and strife.I am drawn to the location-less setting of “hereâ€. We are left with a certain placeless-ness in the poem. “Here†could mean anywhere and everywhere; it could also mean right in front of us in this exact moment. “Here†is also a call to attention, here where we witness, where we notice, where we are called to. Here, where we love, where we mourn, where we hope to become whole.Musically, “here†is metamorphosed through various ostinati gestures as if to depict memory, reflections, echoes which reverberate long after the initial source, a heart beat, relentless waves pounding shores, etc. The work also juxtaposes extreme high and low registers particularly in the piano writing to capture the title image of the “here†found in-between the downs and the sky.The work moves in and out of unison, two part, and optional three part writing; from m. 45 to the end, the middle line baritone part is completely optional. The music functions the same with or without the inner voice part. This is done to aid in the accessibility of the work, to make the music as approachable and successful to groups of all abilities.

It is dedicated to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A few lines of poetry by Romantic poets preface each movement. The theme of love in the first two movements is brought to life by the two pianos with colorful, passionate writing. The final two movements feature the sound of bells---the third movement inspired by cathedrals bells that Rachmaninoff heard as a youngster, and the fourth movement capturing the jubilant sound of Easter carillon.Suite No. 2, Op. 17 was written between 1900 and 1901, and was premiered in 1901 by Rachmaninoff and Alexander Siloti. This virtuosic suite is orchestral in nature and contains four movements. The first movement serves as a march-like introduction, and the second and fourth movements are dances---a waltz and tarantella. Between the two dances is a slow third movement. The child masters eight new notes (up to Treble High G and down to Bass Low F),which facilitates the playing of more adventurous repertoire. The semiquaver, semiquaver rest, dotted crotchet and dotted quaver are introduced, and tempo markings are now in Italian. As in the previous two books, ensemble-playingis encouraged.

Agitato: This is a movement with a clear romantic intention, as well as passionate. It is like a projection of different colors in an atmosphere of lightness. In this case I probably had Mendelssohn in the back of my mind. Everything in it is extroverted. Vigor and gentleness alternate until reaching the end, where I make a clear allusion to the music of Bach. The movement ends in a fast arpeggio.Capriccio: This part has a humorous touch to it. An evidently burlesque subject matter matches the various rhythmic and harmonic combinations. I do not wish to conceal a similarity of style with the music of Prokofiev. As a reminder, my Sonatina for violin solo comes from an idea taken from this Russian master's Sonata, also for violin solo. The mood is marcato and sharp, alternating expressive moments with others of a mysterious nature. To end up with, a fast and lively coda.Ricordo: It has a burlesque introduction, but this serves as a preamble to the expressive nature of the whole. There are several emotional atmospheres in which harmony plays an essential part. The left hand will be responsible for the melody while the right hand constantly draws semiquavers all in a reflexive mood. In the end, the music fades away gently.Animato: This movement brings us back to the extroverted mood of the Agitato. It transitions from an impressionistic atmosphere at the beginning, to a vigorous and energetic climate. Groups of 4, 5 and 6 notes with semiquavers cause certain instability, controlled, on the other hand, by an unchanging tempo. The movement ends in a forceful marcato, though in an overall maestoso atmosphere.
