For the teacher of instrumental music classes, individual differences among students are inevitable. Unfortunately, the lack of flexible materials frequently forces teachers to adopt a quasi-instructional procedure best described as lockstep, where all students in the class rehearse each exercise until the slow members of the class succeed or until the teacher gives up. The Individualized Instructor was designed with the expectation that students are different. With this method, high-, average-, and low-achieving students in a class are able to progress simultaneously at their own rate according to their interest and ability. In addition, the flexibility of the instructional format often allows twelve or more students to perform different musical material simultaneously, thereby eliminating the “follow the leader†approach to music learning. All study materials in the series are musical. Nonmusical exercises are excluded in favor of folk song literature, musical rounds, and musical ensembles. Furthermore, The Individualized Instructor encourages students to think about their music: to analyze unfamiliar material, generalize previously learned concepts and skills, and synthesize all elements into a musically proficient performance. In addition, this series develops many fundamentals (tonality, phrasing, tempo, and musical style) through the use of the singing voice. Singing best provides the “musical†experience that, subsequently, can be applied to the development of musically sensitive instrumental performance. Books 1, 2, and 3 and the supplementary books ensure that these fundamental ideas are carried well beyond the first year of instruction.

Jahrhunderts verloren - auch, aber nicht nur auf der Suche nach spannenden, vertonbaren Texten.Bei William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) schliesslich, der trotz seiner eminenten Bedeutung gar nicht so viel vertont wurde, hat mein Suchradar schliesslich angeschlagen.Fernab der protzerischen Bildungsburgerei eines T.S. Eliot, Lichtjahre entfernt von der gefahrlichen Faschismus-Nahe eines Ezra Pound, gehort WCW, wie er gerne liebevoll genannt wird, mit Elizabeth Bishop und Robert Lowell wohl zu den Fixsternen der amerikanischen Moderne. Diese feine, reduzierte, vermeintlich unscheinbar-verspielte, auf den zweiten Blick aber so subversive und messerscharf-bedeutungsreiche Lyrik hat mich seitdem vollends in ihren Bann gezogen.Auf Gedichten aus drei Banden basierend, ,,Sour Grapes(1921), ,,An Early Martyr and Other Poems (1935) und ,,The Wedge (1944), habe ich schliesslich einen sechs Orchesterlieder umfassenden Zyklus komponiert. Mit diesem wollte ich WCWs Gedichte nicht etwa verdoppeln oder nachzeichnen, sondern ganz bewusst meine personliche Sicht auf diese fragilen Meisterwerke werfen. Dieses Auftragswerk der Wiener Symphoniker und des Wiener Konzerthauses wurde vom fein modellierten Klang und Facettenreichtum dieses wunderbaren Orchesters inspiriert. Es ist meinen Eltern gewidmet. Badlands occur throughout the world, and are represented by dramatic terrain created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.Badlands occur throughout the world, but many of the most striking are in Canada and the United States. This dramatic terrain is created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. The regions known as badlands are frequently difficult to impossible to navigate on foot and are often considered to be sacred lands by cultures that live in these regions. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles.
