Diptyque is the French word for “diptych,” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel, with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music, Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural, religious and political boundaries.

Diptyque est un titre parfaitement adapté cette composition en deux parties. Le premier tableau, majestueux, s’inspire d’une ancienne chanson enfantine intitulée Akkatobai, et dont l’origine est rattachée la ville de Nagasaki. Le second tableau offre un joyeux contraste en termes de style et tempo. Gai et lumineux, il reflète l’île méridionale de Kyushu, où se trouve Nagasaki. Une légère et allègre saltarelle met en valeur la virtuosité des bois. La juxtaposition des deux volets de ce diptyque symbolise l’entente.

La prima, dal carattere maestoso, s’ispira ad un’antica canzone per bambini chiamata Akkatobai, originaria della citt giapponese di Nagasaki. String Thang by Mark Wood is based on the twelve-bar blues. The blues has deep roots in American history, developed out of the work songs and chants of African-American slaves. The Great Migration of the first half of the 20th century saw freed slaves and their descendants move to northern and eastern parts of the U.S., taking their music with them. The blues took on different forms; in turn it helped to create rock, jazz, hip-hop, and other popular genres. A twelve-bar blues uses a repeating chord progression which allows musicians to express themselves creatively with each recurrence. If anything defines the blues, it is the use of blue notes---pitches that don't usually belong in a given key---and elements of improvisation.
