| Britannia Study Score (hps 1446) Hal Leonard
SKU: HL.48021088 Composed by James Macmillan. Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Book...(+)
SKU: HL.48021088 Composed by James Macmillan. Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books. 72 pages. Hal Leonard #M060117817. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.48021088). UPC: 884088649074. 7.25x10.25x0.169 inches. Britannia was written in 1994 as a celebration of a major force in our musical life, the British orchestra. The work fulfils a commission from British Telecommunications plc with the Association of British Orchestras as part of the BT Celebration Series, and provides all the major UK orchestras with a new concert overture for performance in the 1994/95 season. Britannia is a ten-minute orchestral fantasy based on patriotic themes. There is no programme of story as such but the tapestry ofpopular melodies and resonant allusions, given their new and unfamiliar contexts, may provoke some surprising scenarios in the mind of the listener, particularly at a time when petty chauvinism threatens to rear up once again throughout Europe. The piece grows outof a short sketch written earlier this year, Memoire Imperiale, which is based on a march tune by General Reid, an 18th century British army officer who established the music department at Edinburgh University. This theme and the imperial themes of Elgar andArne are thrown into a volatile concoction with other materials an Irish reel (which becomes a jig), a Cockney drinking song, other march tunes and a hazy Celtic modality. All the main ideas are presented in a quick and stark succession during the fast opening section. The slow middle part begins with aserene canon which is gradually undermined by military allusions on brass and percussion. This confrontation leads to the works climax followed by an unsettled coda. Britannia is dedicated to Libby MacNamara of the Association of British Orchestras. $34.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use. Symphony; Romantic. Part. 16 pages. Duration 37'. Breitkopf and Haertel #OB 5328-19. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.OB-5328-19). ISBN 9790004333846. 10 x 12.5 inches. Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.

Chamber orchestra SKU: FG.55011-554-5 Composed by Harri Wessman. Score, s...(+)
Chamber orchestra SKU: FG.55011-554-5 Composed by Harri Wessman. Score, set of parts, piano reduction. Fennica Gehrman #55011-554-5. Published by Fennica Gehrman (FG.55011-554-5). ISBN 9790550115545. Harri Wessman (b. 1949) is interested in all aspects of music that may be expressive, without in any way ignoring the possibilities of melody. He himself describes his harmonic method as a kind of contrapuntally treated jazz harmony. During recent years pedagogic music has become a more and more central area in his output with an emphasis on creating repertoire for budding musicians, from beginners to young professionals. I don't write children's music. Stylistically I write in the same way as for professionals; technically, the pieces just have to be easier to play. Concertino No. 2 for piano and chamber orchestra was commissioned by a Finnish press house Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet Oy for the inauguration of their new office building in 1987. According to the original plan the concertino was to be used in an advertising film of the company. A melody with wide arch which can be heard in the midpoint of the piece, first played by the orchestra and then repeated with the piano, was intended to be the theme song of the film. The 10 minutes duration and small orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet and strings) makes this one movement piece suitable also for young orchestra players. $133.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

| Selections from Boris Godunov Concert band - Advanced De Haske Publications
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 5 SKU: BT.DHP-1043752-140 Composed by Modes...(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 5 SKU: BT.DHP-1043752-140 Composed by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky. Arranged by Tohru Takahashi. The Great Classics. Concert Piece. Score Only. Composed 2004. De Haske Publications #DHP 1043752-140. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1043752-140). English-German-French-Dutch. Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style†of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.
$29.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
