Scored for baritone (or tenor) solo, mixed choir and orchestra, this work was composed in 1936-37, and sets a utopian and pacifist poem by John Addington Symonds (1840-93): Say, heart, what will the future bring / To happier men when we are gone... This edition is the latest addition to Boosey & Hawkess series of organ reductions of choral/orchestral scores (Finzis Requiem da Camera, For St Cecilia, In terra pax). The reductions broaden the reach of these works to choirs which do not wish to present the works with orchestra, as with other standards from the sacred repertoire such the Requiems of Faure and Durufle. athetically recreat The Reductions sympathetically recreate the orchestra scoring for a three-manual organ. Ingeniously, the manual couplings (II to III, II and III to I) are unaltered throughout, with pedal coupled to manuals as appropriate. Detailed registrations are not indicated as these are best left to the performer, taking into account the unique circumstances of the particular instrument, size of choir and acoustic setting at each performance.

Reger composed Palmsonntagmorgen (WoO VI/18) at the beginning of 1902 at the request of the Chemnitz organist and choral director Georg Stolz. Stolz may also have suggested the text by Emanuel Geibel. The division of the text into sections, and the imitative and chordal passages in the five-part unaccompanied setting already point towards Reger's later motets.

The Good Friday Responsory Tenebrae factae sunt for six-part chorus was commissioned in 2012 for Peking University Student Choir and was premiered at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA conducted by Hou Xijin. It is an ambitious work with a fervent intensity. Matsushita sets the two last words of Jesus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? [My God, why hast thou forsaken me] and Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum [Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit] as pained outcries in Stravinskyian harshness, in chords characterized by tritones, as a truly superhuman work of redemption whose Easter message of hope only appears in the last conciliatory F major chord. Although this work lies slightly beyond the upper limit of the musical and vocal technical demands of the Carus Contemporary series, it is well within the abilities of ambitious chamber choirs.

At times Romantic, at other times with a jazzy touch, the Choral collection Bruckner. Secular choral music is full of exciting discoveries and new arrangements at various levels of difficulty. Anton Bruckner’s secular choral music is often overshadowed by his great symphonies and sacred choral works – unfairly, as choral experts Simon Halsey and Jan Schumacher prove with their small but fine selection of choral music inspired by secular texts. Bruckner left only a few movements for mixed choir; instead, his music for male voices constitutes a far larger body of work. For this collection, renowned arrangers from Germany, England, Denmark, and Italy have specially reworked the most beautiful of these choral movements for SATB, enabling this great repertoire to be performed by mixed choirs. Two original SATB compositions are also included. Furthermore, the choral collection features arrangements of songs originally written for solo voice and piano with texts by such poets as Heinrich Heine and Emanuel Geibel. Another highlight is an arrangement of the Adagio from Bruckner’s String Quintet WAB 112, which Heribert Breuer has created for choir to a text by Georg Trakl.- 16 SATB settings, several with keyboard accompaniment- Selected by Simon Halsey and Jan Schumacher- Modern SATB arrangements of male-voice works and solo songs, as well as original compositions - Affordable complete volume (editionCHOR) as well as separate editions available in print and digitally.- Introductory price valid until 31.10.2023, then 27.00 EUR (editionCHORLEITUNG) and 15.00 EUR (editionCHOR, minimum order: 20 copies)

The striking choral writing will instantly touch you in this succinct and moving interpretation of Virga Jesse Floruit (The rod of Jesse has blossomed) by Kentucky composer Brett Ballard. The haunting opening choral statement in E-minor seamlessly leads to an unmetered unison chant section in G mixolydian mode. An ingenious two-subject canon follows in a musical dialogue between the higher voices and the lower voices in B-flat minor. The two choral closing statements bring us back to the original tonality and musically paint the phrase ima summis . . . (reconciling in himself the lowest with the highest). The work concludes as calmly as it began. Quite a journey in thirty measures!
