Vivaldi's setting of Psalm 113 (Psalm 114 in the Protestant Bible) In exitu Israel was probably composed in 1739. Strings and basso continuo accompany the homophonically-written vocal parts. The text of this psalm - the longest of all the vesper psalms - was set by Vivaldi in an extremely condensed composition. Despite its brevity, his fine feeling for the emotional content of the text is wonderfully expressed. Even in this one-movement work the composer creates space for variety by not only varying the string accompaniment, but also playing with the keys effectively and sometimes in surprising ways, or hinting at the responsorial style of psalm settings. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4001800.

Version in A major (version in G major: Carus 31.182/50) The cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen BWV 182 holds a special place in Johann Sebastian Bach's biography. He had been employed as organist and chamber musician at the court of Weimar since 1708; on 2 March 1714, he was appointed concert master of the court, and his inauguration music for this occasion was Himmelskonig, sei willkommen. The cantata was first performed on Palm Sunday of that year, 25 March 1714. Bach performed this cantata several times - always revising and amending it - both in Weimar and in Leipzig. Of the altogether four versions, the first Leipzig version has been selected for the present new edition. Unlike the Weimar versions, it can be realized effectively using modern performance means. In his debut composition of 1714, the newly appointed concert master demonstrated his abilities: the eight movements contain a multitude of beautiful and rewarding challenges for choir and vocal soloists alike, and in addition there is the unusual attraction of a virtuoso solo part for the recorder. The history of the composition of the oratorio is odd: the kernel of this three-part work were the movements from the middle section, the Flight to Egypt, which Berlioz composed on a whim in 1850 and which he passed off as the work of a baroque composer whose existence he himself had invented. In 1854 the triptych, which was completed with the parts entitled The dream of Herodes and The arrival at Sais, had its celebrated first performance. Starting from the Gospel of St. Matthew, with the visit of the astrologer to Herodes and the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, Berlioz chose to relate the story of the events of Christmas from another angle. This skillful dramatisation, with impressive instrumental sections, such as the independent trio for two flutes and harp as well as the effective choruses with local color, make this sacred trilogy a grateful enrichment of the repertoire for Christmas music. Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. The cantate was most likely performed for the first time on 27 September, the 16th Sunday after Trinity, 1716 at the Schlosskirche in Weimar. The text originated from the Kantatenjahrgang (yearly cantata cycle), Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer (Evangelical Devotional Offering) by the secretary of the Weimar high conistory, Salomon Franck. The sermon text for the 16th Sunday after Trinity, the raising of the boy from the dead at Nain (Luke 7: 11-14), is only indirectly reflected in Franck's cantata text. In a prevalent interpretation from that period of this biblical text, the raising of the dead is seen as an allegory for the resurrection of the faithful. In the Shadow of God is the final edition in this series of contemporary settings of the proper introits, adapted from the Gregorian Missal. This edition includes seven musical selections including introits for Ash Wednesday, the five Sundays of Lent, and Holy Thursday. Each of the singable, short melodies includes the antiphon and appointed Psalm verse for each Sunday and will set a tone of reverence and awe for your Lenten celebrations. The mantra-like, repetitive structure also lends them to use in Communion processions without worship aids, or as variable-length post-Communion musical meditations. .
