Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.The village ofMorschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030).

Diamond Concerto is geschreven in opdracht van de Duitse Musikverein Morschied - met dirigent Eric Grandjean - voor een speciaal concert met Steven Mead als gastsolist. De wereldpremiere vond plaats op 28 april 2012 in het Stadttheater van Idar-Oberstein.De opdracht vormt een hoogtepunt in de dertig jaar lange vriendschap van de componist en de solist - waarin ze aan vele gezamenlijke cd-projecten en concerten werkten. En nu is er dan dit concert. Sparke heeft het gecomponeerd met Steven Meads geheel eigen euphoniumklank in het achterhoofd. Hij paste daarbij de diverse stijlen toe die de wereldberoemde virtuoos zich heeft eigen gemaakt tijdens zijn succesvollesolocarriere.Het plaatsje Morschied ligt ten westen van Frankfurt am Main, in het gebied dat bekendstaat als de Deutsche Edelsteinstrasse. Het is beroemd vanwege zijn bloeiende edelstenenindustrie. Om het werk een lokaal tintje te geven is een toepasselijke titel gekozen: Diamond Concerto. Elk van de drie delen is genoemd naar een beroemde edelsteen:1 EARTH STARDit deel is tamelijk sober van sfeer. Het opent met een vrije fantasie van de solist over een statisch akkoord in het orkest. Der Satz beginnt mit einer freien Fantasie des Solisten uber einem statischen Akkord des Orchesters. Dieses fuhrt zu einem Allegro Moderato in Moll, in welchem kurze Motive von sowohl Orchester als auch Solist nach und nach wiederholt und entwickelt werden.2 OCEAN DREAM verwendet ein variiertes Zitat aus Music for Battle Creek von Philip Sparke, das ein schmelzende Melodie enthalt, die schon im Gedanken an Stevengeschrieben worden war.3 BLUE HEART wurde auf Steven Meads Anregung hin im Bebop-Stil komponiert und weist die Form eines Jazz Waltz auf. Moon Song, Sun Dance was commissioned by flugel horn virtuoso, Claude Romailler, and premiered by him at the Swiss National Solo andQuartet Championships in April 2012.As the title implies, the work is in two contrasting movements, which can be performed separately or together.Moon Song opens with a flowing modal theme, which the soloist embellishes before the band takes centre stage.A central section brightens the mood with a new melody over the lightest of accompaniments; this is once again developed by the soloist until the original theme reappears, played by the band. This introduces a cadenza for the soloist which either closes the movement, or can be extended to link directly to the second movement.Sun Dance is a vivace 6/8 scherzo which opens with a flourish from the band. The soloist then introduces the main theme, which in turn is taken up by the band. A short bridge passage heralds a change of key and a new melody from the soloist. A brief central interlude then introduces a change of meter and recalls the main melody of Moon Song, before a recapitulation leads to a florid coda, which brings the work to a close.Solo part: difficulty 5.

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.
When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy.As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing” — lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls” from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars” from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

Tre Volti (Three Faces) has been commissioned by the renowned “New Trombone Collective”, exclusively existing of top-trombonists from the Dutch symphony orchestras. The world première was given by the commissioners and took place in “De Doelen” in Rotterdam on april 16th 2011 - during the “Slide Factory” - European Trombone Festival.The composer aimed to illustrate 3 different aspects of the instrument in as many movements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effects and Techniques) displays a large amount of specific spectacular and acrobatic possibilities and also various colors and sounds by using different mutes. It contains many “glissandi” as well as clusters with semi tones andquarter tones, all being “typical” for the trombone indeed. The Lamento Lirico (Lyrical Lamento) combines the rather serious and noble voice of the trombone with an aspect which not automatically is connected to that instrument: the melodical character. The overall atmosphere of this movement is somewhat sad and strained and refers to the many beautiful but rather dark passages in the orchestral and opera literature where the trombone section as such is used ...The final movement is called Sonata Antica (Antique Sonata) and is directly inspired by two “sonatas” for 3 and 4 trombones by Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707). It illustrates the “historical” dimension of the trombone: indeed it was the only brass instrument being able to play chromatically - many centuries before all other brass instruments - thanks to the unique slide system which even during the Middle Ages was applicable already. The antiphonal position, the dialoguing motives and the “neo-early-baroque” idiom really pay homage to Daniel Speer: he composed a certain number of pieces for brass instruments indeed and the composer used thematic material from his Sonatas in d and a in various ways, thus concluding this varied composition in a festive way.

Tre Volti (zu deutsch: Drei Gesichter) - In drei deutlich kontrastierenden Bewegungen versucht der Komponist, ebenso viele Facetten der Posaune zu beleuchten. Der erste Teil EFFETTI E TECNICHE präsentiert eine Reihe akrobatischer und spektakulärer Effekte, die auf diesem vielseitigen Instrument möglich sind, sowie einige Klangfarben (letztere mit einem Dämpfer gespielt). Das LAMENTO LIRICO enthält die eher ernsten Töne, welche die Posaune in der Regel spielt und kombiniert diese mit einem Aspekt, der doch eher ungewöhnlich für dieses Instrument ist: einem melodischen Charakter. Der dritte Satz - SONATA ANTICA - wurde unmittelbar von zwei der bekanntesten Sonaten vonDaniel Speer (1636-1701) inspiriert. Hier geht es um die historische Dimension der Posaune: Tatsächlich war sie das erste Blechblasinstrument, auf dem man - Jahrhunderte vor allen anderen - schon chromatisch spielen konnte.

Tre Volti (Trois Visages) est une commande du prestigieux New Trombone Collective, composé des meilleurs trombonistes des orchestres symphoniques néerlandais. La première mondiale, assurée par la formation dédicataire, a eu lieu le 16 avril 2011 au Doelen de Rotterdam dans le cadre du “Slide Factory”, le festival européen consacré aux trombones.Le compositeur souhaitait illustrer trois aspects de l’instrument en trois mouvements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effets et Techniques) évoque les nombreuses possibilités acrobatiques du trombone, ainsi que l’emploi de sourdines pour obtenir différents timbres et couleurs. Ce mouvement développe de nombreux glissandi ainsi quedes mesures avec des demi-tons et quart de tons, des effets “typiques” du trombone. Le Lamento Lirico (Complainte Lyrique) tisse une trame l’empreinte mélodique et aux motifs plutôt nobles et sérieux, mettant en évidence l’une des caractéristiques que l’on n’associe pas toujours avec cet instrument. Le climat général de ce mouvement, quelque peu triste et tendu, fait référence aux nombreuses oeuvres orchestrales et opératiques où les trombones se voient attribuer des passages sombres et mélancoliques.Le dernier mouvement, intitulé Sonata Antica, s’inspire directement de deux sonates de Daniel Speer (1636-1707) pour trois et quatre trombones respectivement. Il illustre la dimension historique du trombone, qui était d’ailleurs, au Moyen ge, le seul cuivre capable de jouer chromatiquement gr ce au système de coulisse, et ce plusieurs siècles avant les autres cuivres. La forme antiphonale, les motifs de dialogue et l’idiome “ancien néo-baroque” rendent hommage Daniel Speer. Le compositeur de Tre Volti a emprunté, sa manière, plusieurs thèmes des sonates en Ré et en La pour conclure joyeusement cette composition aux multiples facettes.
