The first time I saw an alpenglow, I had no idea what it was. It was the late 1980s, and I was at a music camp at the base of theRocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. A few of us got up in the middle of the night so we could hike to a vantage pointat the foot of Longs Peak, to watch the sun rise without any trees obstructing our view. Even though we had a few moreminutes to go before the sun breached the horizon, when I looked up at the face of Longs Peak, it was glowing intensely with amost beautiful peach-pink color. This enchanting vision lasted only about ten minutes, after which the color faded as the sunrose. Throughout the next thirty years, whenever I returned to the Rocky Mountain National Park, I would occasionally catchthis pre-dawn light show in all its glory.An alpenglow is an optical phenomenon that is visible on high altitude mountains. It happens twice daily, right before the sunrises and right after it sets. The earth’s atmosphere scatters the sun’s light, allowing particular wavelengths of light through andblanketing the mountains in rich hues of peach, pink, red, and purple.Alpenglow opens with First Light. This movement begins in the pre-dawn hour. The music starts simply and slowly, thengrows increasingly animated as the sky lightens and the horizon shimmers with color. The movement explodes in a massiveflurry of activity when the sun crosses the horizon; this energy eventually fades as the sun rises in the sky. In Arc of the Sun,we follow the sun as it energetically leaps and surges upwards in the sky. The music moves steadily upwards as it keeps pacewith the sun’s progress, then crests as the sun reaches its zenith. As the sun bends back down towards the earth, the musicfollows suit, getting lower in range and slower as the sun nears the horizon. In Radiant Glow, the sun slips under the horizon,giving way to a most radiant alpenglow. As the alpenglow fades and twilight envelops the earth, stars shimmer in the nightsky.-S.G.

The opening of this three-movement work features an initial appearance of the thematic material that returns in various guises later on in the work. The leitmotiv centres on a minor second.
A range of thematic variations is heard in the lively and energetic Metamorphosis One. This movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso, containing melodic passages that return to the opening theme.
Metamorhosis Two is characterised by various changes in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists transform the thematic material each in their own way. This eventually culminates in a passionate tutti passage.
The source of inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH-motif, a musical autograph consisting of the notes B flat, A, C and B. This distinctive motif arises from the leitmotiv (here a descending minor second), which continuesto evolve through various transpositions and transformations. For the composer, this spectacular last movement is an homage to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.

In Metamorhosis Two treden veel veranderingen op in het tempo en het muzikale karakter. Zeven verschillende solisten transformeren ieder op hun eigen wijze het thematische materiaal. Uiteindelijk resulteert dat in een gepassioneerd, tuttigespeeld gedeelte.
De inspiratiebron voor Metamorphosis Three is het zogenaamde BACH-motief, een muzikale handtekening met de noten Bes, A, C en B. Dit karakteristieke motief ontstaat vanuit het leidmotief (in dit geval een dalende kleine secunde) en verandert voortdurend van gedaante door allerlei transposities en omvormingen. Le titre Metamorphosis décrit une transformation musicale – autrement dit, le processus qui commence avec nos origines (Initium), puis progresse à travers l’évolution du corps et de l’ me (Corpus, Animus) et enfin, gr ceà l’expérience de la vie (Virtus, Invidia), se développe en une personnalité adulte (Estasi).
Les musiciens connaîtront des états d’esprit changeants, entretenant la conscience de ce qui a été et de ce qui sera (le présent et l’avenir) tout en jouant. Les passages d’improvisation ont été délibérément laissés vierges –sans notation – afin de permettre à l’instrumentiste d’évoluer sans contraintes dans ce style musical et de laisser libre cours à son imagination.

While composing this beautiful chorale, Hayato Hirose was inspired by the fond memory of the pre-marital days he spent with his beloved wife, Minako.The chorale starts with gorgeous woodwinds, after which the brass section is gradually added to enhance the atmosphere. The main theme is repeated and developed in several different keys in the middle section, followed by the recapitulation and the romantic coda that concludes the work. Moment Musical gives any concert programme a touch of warmth and tenderness.

De inspiratiebron voor het schrijven van dit prachtige koraal vond Hayato Hirose in zijn aangename herinnering aan de verlovingstijd die hij doorbracht met Minako, zijn geliefde echtgenote. Het koraal begint met een prachtige passagein het hout, waarna de kopersectie langzaam wordt toegevoegd voor nog meer sfeer. Het hoofdthema wordt herhaald en ontwikkelt zich in verschillende toonsoorten in de middenstem, gevolgd door de reprise en het romantische codawaarmee het werk eindigt. Moment Musical geeft elk concertprogramma een vleugje warmte en tederheid.

Zu diesem wunderschönen Choral ließ sich Hayato Hirose von der Erinnerung an die Zeit der Hochzeit mit seiner geliebten Frau Minako inspirieren. Moment Musical setzt mit prächtigen Holzbläsern ein, dann wird die Stimmung nach und nach von den Blechbläsern unterstützt. Das Hauptthema wird in mehreren unterschiedlichen Tonarten im mittleren Register wiederholt und entwickelt. Darauf folgen die Reprise und die romantische Coda, die das Werk beendet. Moment Musical verleiht jedem Konzertprogramm einen Hauch von Wärme und Zärtlichkeit.

Ce choral aux lignes délicates et épurées débute avec ferveur. Les bois évoluent avec délicatesse et transparence, magnifiés par les cuivres qui se joignent élégamment au développement. Dans le passage central, le thème principal est exposé plusieurs reprises dans différentes tonalités. Une coda séduisante et romantique vient conclure la composition. Moment Musical est un délicieux flot de légèreté.

Questa corale dalle linee delicate inizia con fervore. I legni sviluppano con delicatezza e trasparenza, aiutati dagli ottoni che si uniscono allo sviluppo del tema. Nel passaggio centrale, il tema principale è esposto a più riprese in varie tonalit . Una coda seducente e romantica chiude il brano.

Atlantic Odyssey was commissioned by the band program at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA, and its director, Dr. Cheryl Newton. The piece is in two extended movements and seeks to portray an imaginary yacht journey off the eastern seaboard of the USA. The first movement, Sunrise at Sea and the Ocean Awakes, opens with an atmospheric depiction of dawn at sea. Floating woodwinds soar above surging brass until a climax heralds the rising sun. Daylight reveals distant horizons and the prospect of a calm voyage, but the sea is never tamed and a light breeze whips up spray around the boat until a couple of high waves rock the boat alarmingly. But the sea soon calms again and the journey continues serenely. The second movement, Homeward Bound and Spindrift, sees us turn for home, the boat scything calmly through the gentle waves in perfect sailing conditions. But once again conditions change, a stiff breeze tugs at the sails and for a moment we are once again at the mercy of the wind and waves. A moment of calm returns but we are suddenly sprayed by spindrift as a gale picks up. The boat is in danger of overturning but we manage to trim the sail and take advantage of the strong winds to enjoy and exhilarating journey home.
