Thanks to his multifaceted skills, Philipp Carl Hoffmann was able to accomplish something special at very different levels: He not only was a brilliant pianist and violist as well as a successful composer, but also found recognition as a scientist and went down in literature as a highly sensitive teacher. As a musician, he met some of the greatest composers of his time, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and witnessed the sale of Mozart's handwritten estate by his widow. Apart from that, he maintained friendly relations with Friedrich Theodor von Schubert, one of the most renowned astronomers in the early 19th century, and gained detailed insight into perhaps the most important period of fortepiano building in Vienna. Last but not least, we get to know him as a strong personality and a very helpful and warm-hearted person. GERMAN TEXT.

Written in 1809, E. T. A. Hoffmanns Miserere remained unprinted and unperformed during the composers lifetime. With its rich contrasts, the work is like a bridge thrown between the musical idiom of his time and the style of the Palestrina school, which Hoffmann so admired. There are a few short five-part a cappella passages that resemble the Palestrina style. Overall, however, the small-segmented structure of the work is definitely noteworthy. None of the twelve movements lasts longer than five minutes. Diary entries confirm the composers inner tension. On 16 January 1809, for example, Hoffmann while working on this piece writes: rather unhealthy state, more like a romantic-religious feeling. With its rich contrasts, E. T. A. The famous Barcarolle from Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann opens the fourth act of the opera, which takes place in Venice. For this reason Offenbach chose a barcarolle - a Venetian gondolier song with its characteristic swaying rhythm. Wil van der Beek’s arrangement gives this romantic song an alternative, lighter beginning, making it suitable for almost any wind orchestra.

Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettes’) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy. For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time. The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.
