William Grant Still’s catalog of works comprises over 200 pieces, including five symphonies, nine operas, four ballets and numerous works for chamber ensembles. He initially found employment as an oboist in pit orchestras in New York City, later as an arranger of popular music for various ensembles, including those by William C. Handy, James P. Johnson and Paul Whiteman. His career as a composer was launched with a performance in 1931 of his Symphony No. 1 “Afro-American” by the Rochester Philharmonic, conducted by Howard Hanson, who would remain a life-long champion of Still’s orchestral works. By the 1950s the symphony had been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and various European capitals.This notoriety earned Still a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1934, after which he moved to Los Angeles. He is credited as the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra (the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra), the first to have an opera performed by a major company (Troubled Island by the New York City Opera in 1949), and one of the first composers to write for radio, films and television. So numerous were his awards and accolades, including three Guggenheim Fellowships and a variety of honorary doctorates, that he was designated as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.”The “Black belt” refers to a region in the southern United States that was distinguished by the color of its fertile soil. It was an area whose rich economy was based on cotton and tobacco plantations that were controlled by rich white people and worked by poor black laborers. Still’s piece From the Black Belt from 1926 is presumably a musical representation of these laborers. The Sacred Spheres by Tyler S. Grant is written in two contrasting movements. The title of the first movement, From Harmony, from heav'nly harmony..., comes directly from the first line of John Dryden's poem, A Song for St. Cecilia's Day. The first few notes musically depict the beginning of the universal framework described in the text through delicate textures and orchestrations that develop as the movement progresses. The second stanza of the poem highlights the capacity for musical elements to inspire passion, which is represented at the climax of the first movement.

The second movement, Cries, hark the foe comes, picks up the poem from the third stanza, highlighting the spectrum of emotions that can be summoned by various instruments. The beginning of the movement highlights the trumpet's loud clangor along with drums that inspire war and conflict. The movement transitions to a section of mourning through the sound of a warbling flute. The ending of the movement combines the final stanzas along with the Grand Chorus to recapitulate earlier material and create a celebratory and impactful finale.

Martin Amlin’s first recital work for Trumpet and Piano brings all the iridescent excitement that has intrigued other performers. Composed for his renowned colleague Terry Everson, Amlin’s sonata pours new wine into old bottles with its three movements titled: 1. Invention, 2. Chaconne, and 3. Moto Perpetuo. The publication provides solo parts for both C and E-flat Trumpet. Composer and pianist Martin Amlin has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Tanglewood Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Massachusetts Artists Foundation, St. Botolph Club Foundation, and the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He was a recipient of an ASCAP Grant to Young Composers and has received many ASCAPlus Awards. He has been a resident at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the MacDowell Colony, where he was named a Norlin Fellow.Much of Amlin’s music is characterized by a pungent tonality and energetic rhythms. His Sonata for Piccolo and Piano and Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano both won the National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition. Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra was premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra,and he has had performances of his music by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver Chorale, Back Bay Chorale, Webster Trio, and the American Vocal Arts Quintet. He has had commissions from the Seattle Flute Society, Pacific Serenades, the Chicago Flute Club, ALEA III, the James Pappoutsakis memorial flute competition, pianist Andrew Willis, and clarinetist Michael Webster.Martin Amlin is Chairman of the Department of Composition and Theory at Boston University and Director of the Young Artists Composition Program at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Ecoles d’Art Américaines in Fontainebleau and the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, and received masters and doctoral degrees as well as the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music.
