These Four Dances from CLORINDA AGONISTES (Clorinda the warrior) are taken from a recently completed dramatic work; a hybrid opera & dance theatre work currently of the same title. The name Clorinda comes from Monteverdi’s opera Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda , whose libretto is from the epic poem by Tasso titled, Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Liberated). The dramatic work, which was commissioned by the London based Shobana Jeyasingh Dance company, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Royal Philharmonic Society, was composed as a companion piece to Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento.

Irish composer Kevin Volans' work has gained international acclaim over the years. Drawing on a combination of European and African compositional techniques, his music displays a unique charm. Volans' distinctive sound is heavily in demand, and since the mid-1980s his work has been performed regularly at such venues as the Pompidou Centre, the Royal Albert Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York. This work for string quartet was commissioned by the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, and was first performed on the 16th December 1990 at the Almeida Theatre, London, by the Smith Quartet. Score. Met deze dromerige compositie schreef de Friese Sjoerd van der Wal een liefdesverklaring aan Friesland. Daarbij gebruikte hij geen Friese volksliedjes, maar probeerde hij eerder het karakter en de atmosfeer van zijn geboortestreekweer te geven. Van der Wal, die veel voor accordeon heeft geschreven, liet ook zijn tweede grote liefde, de jazz, in deze compositie naar voren komen.

Mit dieser traumhaften Originalkomposition schrieb der Friese Sjoerd van der Wal eine Liebeserklärung an Friesland. Dabei verwendete er keine friesischen Volkslieder, sondern versuchte vielmehr, Charakter und Atmosphäre seiner Heimat einzufangen. Van der Wal, der bereits viel für Akkordeon geschrieben hat, ließ außerdem seine zweite große Liebe, die Jazzmusik, in diese reizvolle Komposition einfließen.
