Richard Wagner's Polonaise for Piano, edited by Arthur D. Walker.
Editorial note:
This Polonaise and Trio in D major for Piano solo was probably written as an excercise when Wagner was studying under Theodor Weinlig in 1830.
Wagner described to Edward Dannreuther much later in his life the teaching methods of Weinlig (Grove I, iv, 347; Musical Times, January 1973, Page 26) The pencil corrections on the autograph, part of which is reproduced in the above-mentioned issue of The Musical Times, may be in Weinlig's hand. The Polonaise was rejected by Wagner, the Trio transformed into a Piano duet, and a new Polonaise for Piano duetwas composed.

“The farewell / Vienna, May 4, 1809 / on the departure of his Imperial Highness the revered Archduke Rudolph†– Beethoven added this inscription to the manuscript of this sonata. It is today know by its French title les Adieux and numbers amongst the composer's best-loved piano works. The first movement of the sonata was presumably written directly before the archduke hurriedly left Vienna. Rudolph and other members of the imperial family fled to Hungary to avoid having to endure the French troops' siege and conquest. On his return in January 1810, Beethoven was able to present him with the complete sonata, having written not only the “farewell,†but also “absence†and “return.â€.

El paño moruno, 2. Seguidilla murciana, 3. Asturiana, 4. Jota, 5. Nana, 6. Canción, and 7. Polo. Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) composed a song in 1915 titled Österreischischer Soldatenabschied (Austrian Soldier's Song of Farewell) for the Austrian War Relief Fund. This work inspired the set of four songs titled Lieder des Abschieds (Abschiedslieder; Songs of Farewell), Op. 14, each contemplating the unwilling separation of loved ones, which was written between 1920 and 1921 for alto and piano. These melancholy works are considered among Korngold's finest songs. Songs: 1. Sterbelied (Requiem); 2. Dies eine kann mein Sehnen nimmer fassen (The one thing my desire can never comprehend); 3. Mond so gehst du wieder auf (Moon once again you rise); 4. Gefasster Abschied (Calm Farewell) - this is based on the earlier Österreischischer Soldatenabschied. This version was first performed on November 5, 1921, in Vienna, the composer on the keyboard. Korngold also conducted the premiere of his orchestral version on January 14, 1923, also in Vienna.
