A beautiful vocal work of about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes in length transcribed for 8-part antiphonal trombone choir by Ralph Sauer, L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombone. Handl's Pater Noster is not too difficult and would be appropriate for almost any level group including high school level. The range is conservative with an occasional high B-flat. Jacob Handl was an Austrian composer of Slovene descent, born in Ljubljana. Choirmaster to the Bishop of Olmutz 1579-1585, he lived thereafter in Prague as an organist.

Debussy composed this breathtaking unaccompanied work in 1913, and it became the first solo work for the Böhm flute and the first solo work by a major composer since C.P.E. Bach almost 150 years earlier. The music allows wide latitude for interpretation and can really show off the musical imagination of the performer. The great French flautist Marcel Moyse is credited with adding phrasing and barlines to his friend Debussy's new work.In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greekgod Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thereafter known as Syrinx. This work of 2 1/2 minutes for advanced performers can add a new dimension to your recital, as it is often performed offstage. The sample performance was recorded by Ralph Sauer in May 2012.

J. S. Bach's massive work, The Art of Fugue, is a summation of his powers as a composer of contrapuntal music. Each fugue is a masterpiece in its own right. Number 15 is an unfinished four-voice, quadruple fugue. Only the first three subjects are introduced, the third being a chromatic subject built from the letters of Bach's nameâ€â€B (B-flat), A, C, H (B-natural). Just at the point where all three subjects are combined, the manuscript breaks off, and C. P. E. Bach wrote in the score that the composer has died. Bach clearly intended that the original Art of Fugue theme was to be the final subject and all four themes would combine in a glorious climax. Whether he intended to finish the work or leave it up to others to complete is conjecture. About 8 minutes in length.

What would a creepy piece be if not in a minor key? Managed through the use of accidentals, this mysterious-sounding piece is actually in B-flat minor through a concert B-flat major key with the addition of accidentals. Great time to reinforce the concept that accidentals last a whole measure. With careful attention to dynamics and articulations, you're certain to have a spooktacular performance! (2:00).

The happiest song from this great work, now arranged with a choice of soloist! In this expanded setting, the transparency of the original is maintained, providing the perfect place to add the soloist. Vocal, B-flat, F, or B.C. solo parts are provided, or the piece can be played without a soloist. The harp part is integral to the arrangement but can be performed on synth.
