De benaming 'Canzona' betreft vaak een compositie voor twee groepen blaasinstrumenten. Dit is bij dit werk ook van toepassing, de ene groep is het harmonie- of fanfareorkest en de andere rol wordt vervuld door het orgel wat ondermeer gezien kan worden als een soort blaasinstrument.Het orgel is verder in dit werk de solist hetgeen betekent dat dit instrument vaak op de voorgrond treedt waarbij de harmonie of fanfare een begeleidende functie heeft. Deze rolverdelingwordt echter regelmatig doorbroken door het orkest ook alleen te laten spelen of in dialoog met de solist.Canzona per Organo e Orchestra a Fiato is een driedelig werk in de klassieke opeenvolging snel-langzaam-snel.Het langzame deel is een reeks variaties op het beroemde thema uit de Barok-tijd: 'La Folia' (van onbekende herkomst) dat diverse componisten heeft geinspireerd tot het schrijven van variaties. Verder spreekt deze compositie voorzichzelf. Het is een speel- en luisterstuk met als enige pretentie dat het met plezier gespeeld en beluisterd wordt.

In January 1964 Bernd Alois Zimmermann interrupted the completion of his opera Die Soldaten [The Soldiers] in order to rearrange his orchestral work Dialoge for two pianos. Monologe takes up the original material but develops it towards a different direction: Zimmermann's collage technique based on quotations extends over the entire musical setting so that it is not only Mozart (Piano Concerto in C major KV 467) who has his say but Beethoven, Messiaen and Bach as well.
