Bill Holman titled this one after the signs which used to be in the old-time dance halls around the country. Written in the '50's for Maynard's Birdland Dream Band, this chart is a laid back, swinging tune, with a roaring ensemble section near the end. Blowing space for trombone and tenor.5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Heidi' is the 3rd movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. A gorgeous solo feature for alto saxophone throughout, this piece builds from a quiet beginning to a very powerful point (a 'Bolero' type of tension as the piece develops) before it diminishes to a quiet ending. This 'edited' version is in a lower key, has a shorter solo section and simpler brass ranges, making it more playable for both the soloist and the ensemble while still maintaining the integrity of Oliver's beautiful ballad. 5-4-4-3.

Here is another one of Johnny Richards' great latin tunes as written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This lilting 5/4 chart has a great groove and amazing ensemble writing, with solo space for alto, trumpet, and trombone. This new arrangement makes the piece much easier to play and can be played with traditional instrumentation. Quintile is a part of the Adventures in Time CD.

This edited version of Where's Teddy (as played and recorded by Maynard Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band) is much more playable for the trumpet section as a whole than the original pro version (which is also available). However, everything else is the same and it does not sacrifice any of the original chart's style and charm. It is a medium-swing minor blues tune with solo space for trumpet, tenor saxophone and drums. 5-4-4-3.

This chart was one of the staples in the Tonight Show Band book, and they performed this often. Tommy created a wonderful setting for this classic jazz standard. There is solo space for trumpet and tenor saxophone and lots of wonderful ensemble writing.

Four wonderful tunes.... Eager Beaver, Dynaflow, Opus in Chartreuse and Artistry in Rhythm are included in this medley. Curnow put on paper what the band used to play to close most concerts or dances in the later years. Perfect for a Kenton Tribute Concert when you want to end with the best loved hits of this band. Fairly easy to play for most bands (In fact, the idea was to rest the trumpet section for a while.) 5-5-5-4.

Originally composed by Bill Holman for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Bob Curnow's arrangement of 'Solos' scores the melody in the unison saxophone section and is written for 8-brass. A straight-ahead, swinging chart based on 'rhythm changes,' this is a hip, angular melody that sets up some powerful ensemble passages. There is lots of solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and piano. If you are looking for a chart with a memorable melody and a vehicle to feature your outstanding soloists, this is the one! 5-4-4-3 (opt. guitar).

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This edited version maintains the integrity of Oliver's original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 5-4-4-3.

Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown and Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. This Ellington tune starts out with a rhythm section vamp and swings on from there. The ensemble shouts just scream with wonderful, dissonant voicings that are a thrill to hear! There is solo space for Alto Sax, (of course), Trumpet and Piano. Ellington's melody and Nelson's arrangement ...... an absolute winning combination! 5-4-4-4.

Here is a terrific medium-tempo shuffle chart that the Buddy Rich Band played all the time. It was recorded on the Swingin' New Big Band album (CD available from Sierra Music), and has wide open blowing space in the blues format. A great shout chorus finishes off this exciting, swinging chart from Oliver Nelson. 5-4-4-3.
