Arranged by Lennie Niehaus, this short (and quite dancable) chart exemplifies the Kenton-esque warm and rich ensemble sound we all love. There is solo space for piano (written out) and for alto saxophone. Originally recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on their album Sophisticated Approach, this popular tune out of the Great American Songbook will put a smile on any audience's face. 5-5-5-3.

The chart everyone has been waiting for!! Eight minutes of amazing, dynamic, exciting sounds! This arrangement was commissioned and recorded by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany. It is, of course, based on the centerpiece of the wildly popular show. Everytime this chart was performed in live concerts in Germany (and elsewhere), the audience just erupted with applause and standing ovations. This isn't an easy chart to play, but it is well worth the effort (similar to The First Circle in that respect). All ranges are fairly reasonable, with the 1st Tpt. part topping out at a written high E. This is recorded on the highly acclaimed CD Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

This is one of those superb Holman charts written for Stan Kenton in the early '50's that just swings like crazy. It starts off very soft and easy, with clever linear writing. It then roars into an alto sax solo, to be followed by a trumpet solo. A key change brings the chart to a great shout section before returning to the soft opening for a moment. Finishes easy and nice. A great chart! 5-5-5-4.

This is a wonderful, easy-swing chart on a great standard, set at a moderate tempo. Bill wrote this for and recorded this on his album Bill Holman's Great Big Band (Capitol and Mosaic). It features a tenor and trumpet solo, and terrific ensemble sections for which Bill Holman is very well known. This chart should be very accessible for most bands. 5-4-4-3 (with 2 optional french horn parts).
