Georgeous. The Partita is a wonderful piece of music. Although this piece can be played by young bands, it is musically mature and will be an ideal center piece for any band concert, middle school through the university level. Bring the audience to you with Partita.'Partita' was originally composed for brass band in 1973. The work is in three movements, and uses material based on the 13th century plainsong 'Dies Irae. the opening Intrada is sombre. the second movement is a 'chorale and variations. the chorale melody follows the main outline of the plainsong. the five variations are varied in mood and intensity. the final March is much happier in mood and has a lyrical tune in the middle first heard on horns. However, references to the 'Dies Irae' are still apparent and the final bars of the work contain a quote from the opening movement.

With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the sailing age. It was during the 16th to the mid-19th century where large sailing vessels dominated global exploration, international trade, and naval warfare. The piece's compound meter provides the pulse of movement as it pitches and rolls with the rhythm of the waves. The driving main melodies convey the determination and courage of the explorers and their crew. Dissonant harmonies suggest rough seas, turbulent weather, and other constant dangers that sailors must endure. Finally, the ending sweeping melody and climax reflects the joy and triumph at arriving on a new land at the apex of a long and intense voyage. With evidence of watercraft dating back to 8000 BC, travel by water has remained an important aspect of life to many civilizations. From paddling down a river or crossing a large lake, to steaming across an entire ocean, generations of humans have traveled on water to explore foreign lands, to seek food and precious materials, to move and trade cargo, and to attack and fend off enemies. With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the age of sail. I wrote Galloping Ghosts (A Ragtime March) to conclude a concert of my chamber music in New York City on October 28, 1986. It is the final part of a work called Rags for Divers Players. This work was written to show the variety possible within the standard rag form. I used all the players available for the finale -- two violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano. Since this is a rather unusual instrumental combination and not easy to reassemble, I decided to rescore the work for concert band. Galloping Ghosts is written in a standard march form but incorporates many of the syncopations found in ragtime. The uniquely American music called ragtime traces its history to African rhythms brought over by slaves. Over the years this music became welded to European musical forms such as the quadrille and the march. Drums and banjos and the minstrel tradition lent a special flavor, and from all these elements ragtime slowly evolved within the largely unknown black subculture of the late 19th century. In the late 1890's it emerged as a fully developed form in the classic piano solos of Scott Joplin (1869-1917). Joplin's 1899 hit, Maple Leaf Rag, was an overnight sensation and brought ragtime worldwide fame. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute 1 and 2, 2 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass and Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon 1 and 2, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Cornet 1, 3 Bb Cornet 2, 3 Bb Cornet 3, 2 Horn 1 and 2 in F, 2 Horn 3 and 4 in F, 4 Trombone 1 and 2, 4 Bass Trombone, 2 Baritone (B.C.), 2 Baritone (T.C.), 4 Tuba, 1 String Bass, 1 Timpani, 1 Xylophone, 3 Percussion 1, 3 Percussion 2.

A humorous program number that plays with the listener's expectations, it is technically simple, but uses unusual sound resources (clapping hands, rapping heels, novel percussion sounds) o produce a work that delights the ear and challenges the mind. Often cited as a cornerstone of the young band repertoire (it is on both the UIL - Texas and NYSSMA required music lists) we are pleased to issue this delightful piece as part of our Carl Fischer Classic Band Edition.

A beautiful slow dance that captures the essence of beauty. The 'Pavane' pulls at the audience and causes a reaction of quiet reflection. Musicians will share the joy of playing this wonderful composition. The Pavane - an old stately dance of Italian or Spanish origin - can be traced back to the 16th century. French composer Gabriels Faure's Pavane, written in 1886 for orchestra for a series of concerts in Paris, exudes charm, gentility even; the music flows easily yet with a sure sense of direction. In 1919 the composer reused it in his one-act divertissement Masques and Bergamasques. Faure was much revered during his lifetime as a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for many years together with his connection with church music as an organist. In concert performance the Pavane benefits from being allowed to unfold at its own unhurried pace and in its (mostly) own quiet way.

This tone poem, suggested by the 4th Century struggle of the Visigoths within the Roman Empire, contrasts the slow opening four-note motive in the low brass with quicker more rhythmic material depicting the battles of the tribe with the Roman legions. From these elements, Sean O'Loughlin has crafted an exciting and sonorous piece that will show off the capabilities of a developing young band to great effect. A large percussion section is used with great skill to energize this serious concert work.

Music of enormous excitement and expectation - marked very animated - with brass blazing a powerful call against a tingling triplet figure in support. In Wagner's own words - awaken the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life.In a letter addressed to My dear Liszt, dated May 1852, Richard Wagner writes: It was you who awakened the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life. He was referring to a performance of his opera Lohengrin which Franz Liszt conducted at the Weirner Court Theatre on August 28, 1850. The letter was sent from Zurich, since Wagner was exiled from Germany at this time. He had completed his romantic opera, Lohengrin, some five years earlier but doubted whether he would ever hear it performed. The action takes place in Antwerp in the first half of the 10th century. Elsa and Lohengrin are to be married and the 3rd Act opens as they proceed in great splendour, accompanied by their respective noblewomen and noblemen, to the cathedral. As a Prelude to the curtain rising Wagner unleashed music of enormous excitement and expectation - marked very animated - with brass blazing a powerful call against a tingling triplet figure in support. In the opera this magnificent Prelude leads directly into the Bridal Scene as Elsa and Lohengrin make their way solemnly to the betrothal ceremony. Wagner achieves this change of mood and atmosphere most skillfully. In arranging the Prelude for concert performance the challenge was to provide an ending which provides a satisfactory climax to Wagner's blaze of instrumental colour, without proceeding to the solemn betrothal music. This was resolved by using the composer's own mighty flourish to end Act I of his opera. Now, the gauntlet is thrown down to all who perform it to - in Wagner's own words - awaken the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life..

The music of War, Women and Witchcraft is a web with strands of magic, a romantic impression of the Scottish landscape and the sounds of battle using fanfare-like figures and drum effects, and a lovely melody near the end when everyone lives happily ever after. The titles comes from a book by the Scottish poet, author and composer James Hogg, known as The Ettrick Shepherd. It is the subtitle to his wonderful book The Three Perils of Man. I was commissioned to write a wind band work of this title for the Borders Festival in 1991. The book weaves fact and fantasy togethers around the Scottish Borders in the thirteenth century. I have used a note row based on some of Hogg's melodies and also created my own mixture representing Master Michael Scott, the Black Magician, and his wild adventures, the battle for the castle at Roxburgh and the prize of the Princess' hand to the winner of the battle. The music is a web with strands of magic, a romantic impression of the Scottish landscape and the sounds of battle using fanfare-like figures and drum effects, and a direct quote of a Hogg Strathspey melody near the end when everyone lives happily ever after. -BF.

Program Notes: It was a happy coincidence that the commission for SINFONIA XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL VIENNA came from the Henry David Thoreau School located in Vienna, Virginia. Thoreau is one of the magic names in American culture: Henry David Thoreau, one of the leading figures of the Transcendentalist movement, centered in 19th-century New England, left us a body of unique philosophical and poetical writings. To utter the words, Walden Pond, is to invoke an America long past in physical actuality, but still present in the minds and hearts of many American citizens. The name, Vienna, of course, summons thoughts of the Old World: culture, fine food, wine, civilized cities. While contemplating the form that SINFONIA XVI should take, I found myself thinking of two pillars of Viennese culture: expressionism and the waltz. Musically speaking, expressionism reached a zenith in the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. It was Berg, in particular, that I wanted to invoke in the outer movements of my composition. I knew I would also have to include a waltz, and an invocation of the mysterious forces that are contained in both expressionism and transcendentalism. Thus was the structure of the work generated. The outer movements with their vision of the night sky and the stars, Aldebaran and Sirius, frame the central movements, which are essentially two versions of the same material, and are quieter and less dramatic. The outer movements are symmetrical, and share both pitch and rhythmic materials. Accordingly, I see the work as a ternary form, with the central movements forming a unit within the outer frame: A (Movement 1) B (Movements 2 & 3) A' (Movement 4). Harmonically, the work can be summarized by the two pitch-series which occur in the opening bars of Movement 1: the initial 12-note row, with a tonal center on F-sharp (measures 1-6), and the subsequent D-minor Dorian 7-note row (beginning in measure 14). Aspects of these materials occur in all four movements, but they are most strongly present in Movements 1 and 4. Note that the 12-note row is not subjected to the usual serial procedures, but instead is treated as a signifier and is left unchanged. Since the fourth movement takes up where the first movement leaves off, I can conceive of one interpretation of SINFONIA XVI as an evocation of Thoreau himself contemplating two of the brightest stars on a clear, cold night. Aldebaran is an orange, first-magnitude star, located in the constellation Taurus; Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the sky, and is located in the constellation Canis Major. Thoreau interrupts his star-gazing to entertain some inward thoughts, waking dreams, as it were, then returns his gaze to the splendid night sky and all its treasures. Although many other interpretations of the material are possible, it is important to remember that the abstract materials of the piece -- pitch, rhythm, structure -- are what count the most. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 4 Flute 1, 4 Flute 2, 3 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet (opt.), 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 3 Bass Clarinet, 3 Bassoon, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 2 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 2 Horn 1, 2 Horn 2, 3 Trombone 1, 3 Trombone 2, 3 Euphonium B.C., 2 Euphonium T.C., 5 Tuba, 2 Timpani, 3 Percussion 1, 3 Percussion 2, 3 Percussion 3, 3 Percussion 4.

The Wexford Carol is a traditional Irish carol dating back to the 12th century. This wonderful arrangement begins with a solo piccolo (or flute) amidst a transparent harmonic setting. Melody is then presented by various sections of the band amid lush harmonies as the music develops. Changing styles and textures keep the interest level high, before building to a powerful full climax. From here, the music ends as it began, with the solo piccolo leading to a sensitive and heartfelt conclusion. This is the perfect lyrical selection for holiday programs, or for concert use anytime.

Rondeau of the Shepherds, so ran the official title of the famous Dutch Christmas carol ‘Midden in de winternacht’. In 1948 wrote Dutch poet and writer Harry Prenen this text. The melody is known by the 17th/18th- century organ composers of suites Daquin, Balbastre and Dandrieu. Rondeau of the Shepherds was subtitled Catalan Christmas Carol. The song itself is because its origins in a Spanish (Catalan probably) Christmas song from the late Middle Ages, El Desembre congelat. The motives of this song (shepherds, flutes, drums) demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and give a picture of the late medieval Christmas experience. . Perfect as an uptempo intermezzoin a church service. . Ideaalals uptempo intermezzo in een kerkdienst.
