According to music critic Mark Azarra, Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was “one of the four best composers of instrumental music in the 20th century, next to George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives”. Many of his nostalgic songs such as Sleigh Ride and Blue Tango are firmly embedded in the American popular music culture. In 1945 at the request of Roger Voisin, the principal trumpeter of the Boston Pops Orchestra, Anderson wrote the Trumpeter’s Lullaby. This version for concert band by will be a sure winner.

Nostalgische songs van zijnhand, zoals als Sleigh Ride en Blue Tango, zijn stevig ingebed in de Amerikaanse lichtemuziekcultuur. Op verzoek van Roger Voisin, destijds eerste trompettist van het Boston Pops Orchestra, schreef Anderson in 1945het luchtige stuk Trumpeter’s Lullaby.

Trumpeter's Lullaby gehört seit seinem Entstehungsjahr 1950 zum unterhaltsamen Standardrepertoire vieler Trompetensolisten. Leroy Anderson komponierte den Titel auf Anregung von Roger Voisin, dem ersten Trompeter des Boston Symphony Orchestras. Dieser wünschte sich ein Solo, das sich vom lauten, triumphalen Klang der meisten Trompetensoli unterschieden sollte. So entstand die Idee zu diesem Wiegenlied, das nun in einer Bearbeitung für Trompete und Blasorchester vorliegt.

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

A Nottingham Festival débute par un motif ascendant qui contraste avec la fougueuse entrée des cuivres. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. Une coda énergique met fin cette somptueuse composition qui souligne la force créatrice du compositeur.

Cambiamenti di umore, dal festoso al divertito per poi tornare al maestoso, come anche un’orchestrazione bilanciata che riesce a mettere in risalto molti strumenti come anche l’organico nei passaggi in tutti, fanno di A Nottingham Festival un vero piacere musicale per esecutori e pubblico.

The source of inspiration for Thailand Impressions was a trip that the composer made to the magnificent country of Thailand. The three movements reflect the many different aspects of this fascinating part of the world including Bangkok - both modern and antique, Buddhist temples and the infamous Burma railway.

Een reis door Thailand brengt ons eerst naar het oude en moderne Bangkok. In deel twee komt het ondoorgrondelijke en menslievende gedachtegoed van het boeddhisme aan bod. De Birma-spoorlijn is het onderwerp van het derde deel. Dezewerd aangelegd door duizenden dwangarbeiders, de ‘treinmuziek’ wordt dan ook twee keer onderbroken door het koraal Aus tiefer Not. Een mooi werk over een veelzijdig land met een rijke geschiedenis.

Die Inspirationsquelle zu Thailand Impressions war eine Reise des Komponisten in dieses herrliche Land. In drei Sätzen nimmt die Musik den Hörer mit auf eine Reise durch das alte und neue Bangkok, zu einer Zeremonie in einem Buddha-Tempel und entlang einer historischen Bahnlinie. Kees Schoonenbeek s’est inspiré d’un voyage en Tha lande pour la composition de ce triptyque. Le premier tableau est consacré Bangkok, ville agitée et mystérieuse où l’ancien et le moderne demeurent côte côte. Le second tableau, plus mystique, dépeint l’insondable mystère et la conception humanitariste des croyances bouddhiques. Le troisième tableau suit la ligne de chemin de fer qui mène vers la frontière du Myanmar via le Col des Trois Pagodes. Des milliers de prisonniers de guerre et de travailleurs forcés périrent dans la construction de cette ligne de fret.

FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST is based on the hymn-tune “St. Anne,” which was used by G.F.Handel in the Chandos anthem “O Praise the Lord,” and by J.S.Bach in his triple fugue in E-flat “The St. Anne Fugue.” James Curnow’s FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST captures the thoughts of this magnificent hymn, which speaks of our country’s reliance upon God. The unusual 4/4 meter setting with artfully crafted re-harmonizations and lush counterpoint gives each listener cause to reflect on the importance and meaning of this melody to patriotic Americans everywhere.Inspired!

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.
The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

The Way to Heaven commence par des motifs tremblants pour bois et des fanfares de cuivres qui se développent vers une apogée ; ensuite une modulation introduit une courte citation de l’hymne national polonais, Mazurek Dbrowskiego. Alorsque ces idées s’affaiblissent, on entend le signal pour décoller en urgence, puis le son rauque des moteurs Merlin de l’escadron mis en marche, avant que les avions ne s’alignent pour décoller.
