As the title suggests the work dying and dancing for Euphonium solo and Piano accompaniment is in two parts, which are played without a pause between the two.

The first part, an adagio, is not necessarily meant to be evocative of the actual act of passing away, but more perhaps of the contemplation and reflection upon one's life as that time approaches, and particularly of sorrow over regret and disappointment. The unsettled mood of the music reflects this bitterness, and stands in contrast to the expansive peace of the grave, heard at the beginning and end of the adagio.

Dance, with ironic wit, the second part, is the other side of the same coin; perhaps humor of the gallows describes its spirit. At once fatalist and mocking, it brings to mind the words of the ancient teacher Koheleth, The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

I was pleased to compose dying and dancing in 2013 for Mark Kellogg, a superb Euphonium artist and my former trombone iProfessor at the Eastman School of Music.

Massenet's Three Pieces for Piano, Four Hands Opus 11 was published in 1867. Two of the pieces were adapted for Cello in 1877. Mr. Sauer has arranged these two pieces for Euphonium bass clef and Piano:
1. Andante sostenuto
2. Allegretto vivo scherzando
The Andante is flowing and lyrical with the Allegretto being a lively 6/8 dance in A-B-A form.
The two movements total about 5 minutes and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Debussy's original six-movement suite was written and first performed in 1908 on the Piano. It was dedicated to Debussy's daughter, Claude-Emma who was only three at the time.

This lovely arrangement by Ralph Sauer of two of the movements: The Little Shepherd and Golliwogg's Cakewalk are suitable for advanced performers and total about 6-minutes in length. Solo part is in bass clef.

Debussy's beautiful work Reverie, originally for Piano was written in the late 19th Century and is ripe with his Impressionist style. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel wrote over 460 works, mostly for solo piano and voice (lieder). She set over 34 songs to poems by Goethe, who was her favorite poet. Her songs are very expressive and are in a similar style as Schubert. The Goethe Lieder is a collection of four songs and is just right for a young performer at the intermediate level, however even a mature artist will enjoy the beautiful music of this talented composer.
