The plunger has a long and storied history in the jazz trombone tradition, and this piece continues that legacy. Keep The Stick is flexible enough to feature a single soloist or the entire trombone section and is a great way to introduce your trombone players to the classic sound of the plunger. The chart swings right from the get-go and the roaring shout chorus will not overwhelm the trumpet section. Stop on down to the local hardware store to get a plunger for your trombone soloist and tell the clerk to Keep the Stick!

Recorded in 1971 by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Have A Nice Day, this Sammy Nestico classic opens with a short ensemble blast at fortissimo-plus before two trombones (1st and 2nd) present the main theme as a dynamic duo. Then 3rd Trombone carries an improvised solo chorus, followed by an ensemble section and a replay of the trombone duo. The chart closes out with short ad lib solos -- 1st Trombone, then 2nd Trombone -- over a sustained ensemble chord.

Here is a beautiful trombone solo feature for jazz ensemble with optional string orchestra. The string parts can easily be replaced or augmented with the included synthesizer part, or the work can be performed with standard big band instrumentation only. Your developing trombone soloist is supported through a series of different scenes with lush, graceful orchestration and an ever-descending harmonic progression. A transcription of the improvised portion of the solo on the recording is provided. An optional marimba part adds depth, color and motion. The top trumpet/flugel note is F-sharp. This is a subtle and mature work for jazz orchestra.

Alternating between Latin and swing, this impressive new piece is reminiscent of the way jazz players usually perform On Green Dolphin Street. The opening Latin section is over a rhythmic ostinato and pedal F, which makes the release to swing even more effective. The solos for alto saxophone and trumpet are one chorus each (but could easily be extended) using the same Latin/swing format as the head. Following the solo section is a saxophone soli and an exciting breakdown section. Some wide dynamic contrasts in the final ensemble section take the chart out. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone to A-flat, Trombone 4 is for bass trombone.).

An exciting jazz waltz that swings all the way! The melody is stated by tenor and trombone moving into two solo sections: trombone 1 and trumpet 2, then alto 1 and tenor 1 followed by a drum solo. An interlude builds into the reprise of the melody. An outstanding chart! (5:00).

Andy has become one of our best selling writers and this impressive chart proves why. Here’s a delightful tune that could have come straight out of the Count Basie library, except for the fact that it was composed to match student levels. The four bar hi-hat solo leads to a strong ensemble intro. A unison tenor sax/ trombone section soli theme follows until the bridge section shows us the sax section for four bars then the full ensemble which leads to the last sax/trombone theme. Written or ad lib solos follow then it’s a classic Basie style shout chorus with four measure drum solo fills. A great style-teaching-tool, and a perfect opener for any festival or concert performance. Optional high/low Trumpet parts are provided on this publication.
